Annabeth's POV
I'm just going to say it.
Capture the Flag here is TAME compared to Capture the Flag at Camp Half-Blood. There are no swords, knives, armour, helmets and we're not even allowed to poke people with sticks. We are just allowed to tag them. My problem with that is this.
People don't find 10 year olds that intimidating unless they're carrying some sort of weapon.
This was looking to be the worst Capture the Flag I had ever played. But I had a plan.
I sat on my bed with my New York Yankees cap in my hands, a present from mom, that would make me invisible. All I had to do was wear this then getting that flag would be simple. No one would find me on the way, and I could do a little exploring.
The girls around me were all giggling about something.
I didn't think they'd get this excited about a game.
Suddenly from outside there was a loud announcement.
"Capture the Flag starts in 5 minutes!"
I almost got squashed in the hurricane of girls running and squealing past my bed to get to the door. I held my cap firmly in my hand before going through the door myself.
As I looked at what team I was on I realised Percy was on the opposite team.
Oh I was going to crush him like a bug.
I made my way to our side of the forest when our team captain ran up to me.
"Hey, Annabeth Chase right?" I nodded
"I need you to go and Chase that Jackson kid on the other team. I've heard that he's going to be attacking our flag and you know him, right?" He said in a hushed voice. Did he have to speak that quietly? It wasn't like he was discussing battle plans.
Though I guess this is as close as mortals can get to doing that.
He then smiled and started laughing " Sorry for the pun! Do you get it? CHASE that Jackson!" He continued laughing.
"Wow so clever of you!" I said sarcastically, before walking away.
Idiot.
Honestly, I was a little upset because I had wanted to be on the attacking team, but it wasn't like I would witness any action so it wasn't like I would miss anything.
I walked to the area where our flag was hidden.
It was hidden in such plain sight I felt like face palming. It was in the middle of a shallow creek in an open clearing.
Maybe they thought no one would try and get the flag if they had to go through water to get it.
Well they can have a sticker for trying to think of a place.
I climbed up a tree and waited until someone tried to take the flag.
*Time Lapse*
It honestly felt like hours before anyone came close to getting our flag, and that was when an 11 year old accidentally stumbled over a tree root into the clearing.
Whereupon he got caught.
Then I saw someone creeping into the clearing, and I was surprised to see that it was Percy. He isn't as slow as I thought he was going to be. He seemed pretty surprised that the flag was in such plain sight and there was no sign of any defenders too.
Boy was he wrong.
He looked around before walking into the creek.
I wasn't going to let him get the flag so easily.
I put my cap on and quietly climbed down the tree, making sure no twigs snapped as I made my way down. I then walked behind him and followed him into the creek. Just as he was about to grab the flag, I took my cap off, tapped his shoulder and cried "TAG!"
The poor boy was so scared he tripped over his own feet and landed in the water.
Well, now we're evens for him scaring me at archery.
Percy was so mad at me that I started laughing. You should've seen him, drenched, looking like a drowned Oracle of Delphi.
The next second I find myself with my bottom under the surface of the creek.
"You did not...!" I shouted.
"Oh, I did!" Percy shouted back. He laughed. It was strange though, I didn't remember Percy pulling me in. It was like the water grabbed...
No. Impossible.
Percy took a handful of water and splashed it in my face.
Oh, it was on.
I grabbed a handful of reeds growing at the edge of the creek and caught Percy by surprise. The reeds flew threw the air and promptly onto his head. I laughed, holding my sides. Percy looked like he had started adding green hair extensions to his black hair.
"Ugh! What's all this Seaweed doing!" He shouted, pulling the mass from his hair.
"Silly! That's not seaweed, those are reeds... But if you insist on calling them that, SEAWEED BRAIN!" I cried laughing. I had just found my perfect nickname for him.
"You don't have to be such a Wise Girl all the time Annabeth!" He grumbled.
"Wise girl! I'll show you Wise Girl!"
"What on Earth is going on here?" I turned my head to see Em walking towards us, not looking very happy. That when I realised where I was. I was sitting in the middle of the creek, drenched with water that was FREEZING. I started shivering. Percy didn't seem too discouraged, on the contrary he was making ripples in the water with his thumb while making bubbles appear around him.
I didn't even want to know how he was making those bubbles. It's grossing me out thinking of it.
"You two get out at once!"
Percy smiled at me and held out his hand. "Shall we?"
I smiled "You're not going to drop me again are you, because if you do I will..."
"Consider me warned." I looked at his hand, before laughing and taking it. As we walked out of the creek together, I plucked out a bit of reed in his hear and whispered "Seaweed Brain".
