The Journey Begins
All of us walked out of the school and into the bright afternoon light. It was warm, but Liam still insisted that I have his jacket since all I had was a short sleeved t-shirt. And I had to admit, his jacket felt amazing. Well, warm, amazing.
No one talked, but I had a feeling that no one knew where to go exactly. Except for maybe Clancy, who always kept his stupid secrets.
I gripped Liam's hand, and finally broke the silence. "Does anyone know where we're going?"
It was silent. Everyone looked around at each other, believing that at least someone knew where our destination was. But no one spoke, and we were screwed.
Oh right. There was stupid Clancy.
I turned to him. "Do you know where to go? Because I have a feeling you do."
He feigned hurt. "Why Ruby, if I had known where to go, don't you think I'd have told all of you by now?"
"No," I replied, completely dead panned.
Clancy looked thoughtful. "You're absolutely right. We're going to a... special place."
"Special place," Vida echoed. "Then tell us where this fucking special place is, or I'll - "
"Shut. Up." Chubs looked angry. "Where. Are. We. Going."
Clancy sighed. "I'll tell you when we get there."
"Then what would be the point?" Olivia asked.
"Don't know."
But still, no one mentioned it again. Clancy could be a jackass for all I cared. I only cared about myself and Liam. Chubs too, I guess, since he was kind of sort of Liam's friend. Besides, Liam cared about Chubs.
We walked and walked in silence until Liam spotted something in the distance that made his eyes gleam with hope. He started running, and I immediately followed suit. Everyone else did too, but Liam didn't slow down whatsoever.
He approached a car. A black van to be exact. Liam carefully touched the sides like it was some sort of precious gem.
"I want the car," Liam declared smiling. "We're using it to get to wherever the hell Clancy wants to take us."
"But the car could belong to someone," Olivia said quietly.
"What does it matter!" Vida snapped. "We're all dead anyways since apparently the government's sending people after kids like us. Stealing some stupid ass car won't mean one damn thing." I hated to admit it, but she was right.
Liam opened the door, but something - no, someone - jumped out and sprinted away. The retreating figure looked vaguely familiar, so I chased after it.
"Ruby stop!" Chubs yelled. But I didn't listen.
Miraculously, I caught up to the person and tackled them to the ground. I studied their face, and was taken aback. "Zu?"
She looked surprised, but nodded. Zu didn't say anything as usual. Instead, she grabbed my hand and walked us back to the van.
I introduced her. "Guys, this is Zu. I've been tutoring her in the summer." They were all staring at me like I was insane. Except for Liam who just smiled at her and held out his hand.
"Hi, Zu. I'm Liam. Ruby's told me so much about you. I've heard that you're the coolest little girl ever!"
Zu blushed and shrugged, shaking his hand.
"Who's car is this, Zu?" I asked.
She just shrugged again, and gave me an apologetic look.
"Well then, we can just take it, can't we?" Liam asked excitedly. He hopped into the drivers seat.
