Aliche P.O.V.

"Attention teachers and students," sounded the principal on the overcom, "You may now release your students to their areas of departure. Have a great summer!"

My class of Kindergarteners stood and lined up at the door, waiting for me. They are angels and I'm really upset to see them go. We walked outside and stopped by the bus ramp first, "Have a good summer you guys!" I waved to them as they went on their separate buses. Then I walked the rest of my children to the car riders and walkers areas. I always get emotional on the last day of school. It's the time where I see how far my children have come and how much they've improved since the begining of the year.

I turned around to walk back to my classroom, when I heard a litle voice calling my name, "Ms. Garcia!" I turned around and saw my student, Melanie, running towards me.

I bent down and she hopped into my arms, "Melanie, where is your mother?"

"She isn't here yet, but I made you this!" she handed me a hand drawn picture of a woman and a little girl. "That's you and that's me," she pointed out.

"It's beautiful, Melanie. When did you make this?"

"Last night. Mommy had a friend over and I was lonely," she looked sad.

"Oh, well I love it, sweetheart," I gave her another hug. "Why don't you sit against this wall and wait for, Mommy. OK?"

"Ok, Ms. Garcia. Bye," she waved at me and sat down on the concrete against the wall. I went back to my classroom, clutching onto the picture. It took me another hour and a half to clean up the rest of my stuff and pack it in my car. Once finished, I walked into the office to say goodbye.

That's when I saw a little girl sitting in one of the chairs, "Melanie?"

She looked up at me and her smile brightened, "Hi Ms. Garcia!"

I walked to her side and sat down in the chair beside her, "What are you still doing here?"

Her face dropped immediately, "This happens all the time, Mommy is always late coming to get me."

"Does she work late?"

She shook her head, "No, she doesn't work at all. She likes to hang out with her friends a lot, though."

"Really? Where?"

"What is that big stick Bam Bam used to carry around in the Flinstones?"

I looked at her confused, "A club?"

"Yes! That's where she goes everyday."

I looked at the poor child and felt horrible. This has been going on for who knows how long and I wasn't able to help her. I was her teacher. I was supposed to be there for her, "Wait right here please, Melanie." She nodded her head and I got up from my chair. I walked down the back of the office until I found the principal. I knocked on her door, "Hello, Mrs. Bridges."

"Hello, Ms. Garcia. How may I help you?"

"That little girl, Melanie, she said her mother has been late before?"

"Yeah, I don't know. Neglectful mother," she shrugged.

"Well have you contacted her parents? Are they on their way?"

She shook her head, "I did, but there was no answer."

I nodded my head, "Thank you, Mrs. Bridges. Have a nice summer."

"You too, Ms. Garcia." I walked out of her office and back to the little girl.

"Melanie, I am going to give you something, but you cannot tell anyone I am giving you this or that you have it, OK?"
