The hot August sun beat against my fair skinned shoulder, causingbeads of sweat to trickle down my neck, all I could think of wasgetting into the A.C and to shower so that I may exfoliate theunwanted layers of grease and sweat populating my body; yet myattention was being detained by my neighbor Dana Kane; a lostadolescent youth with bleached hair that was a mess of her naturalcarrot orange hair the the blonde hair dye dead at the end and blueeyes. At first glance at Dana she would to only live off of any foodgroup as long as it came from a drive thru window or delivery by hershapely figure.
She had been blathering on about some nonsense since seeing mecome home from work; normally I paid no attention to what the younggirl says most of the time but today she said something that caughtmy attention.
"Excuse me, what?" I laughed finding her statement hilarious .
"I have a girlfriend for you." Dana repeated.
"I heard you but what do you mean you 'have a girlfriend forme' Dana, I just broke up with my boyfriend and I'm really notlooking to get into another relationship." I replied.
"Trust me, you'll have a quick change of heart when you meetMackenzie; you'll love her." Dana spoke seeming sure of herwords.
"Oh I highly doubt that; I don't believe in love at first sight.Infatuation yes, love no." I rebutted taking a sip of lukewarmwater.
"You will. Mackenzie and I have been friends for six years; wemeet back at this reform school on Saint West Boulevard when we weretwelve." Dana said.
"So she's still 17? Ah huge pass."
"Why?"
"She's a minor you dipshit; The Romeo and Juliet law cut off agehere in Florida is 17 and 23. I'm 24 years old. It's illegal." Iargued.
"Only if you too have sex; and even if y'all did I wouldn't sayanything." Dana replied, causing me to roll my eyes as I wishedthat Dana would just stop freaking talking but I knew that the onlytime her mouth was closed is when she's eating; sometimes not eventhen; "Come on Carter, just meet her. Who knows you might changeyour mind."
"Fine; when do I get to meet her?" I sighed knowing that itwould be the only way to shut Dana up and resisting would beeffortless.
"About an hour or so. She's spending the night; which you're morethan welcomed to join too."
"Can't; work tomorrow."
"You're always working."
"Called being an adult; Can't live off of mommy and daddyforever." I whispered, mumbling the last but under my breath, "I'm gunna go shower; wash this crap off my skin and somewhat feelhuman again." I spoke hoping to get away for just a little bit andhave a short period of peace.
"You do that; first impressions are everything." Dana tried toadvise.
Walking into my room, provided by a dual entrance, locking the doorbehind me I grabbed my towel and shower caddy, heading towards thebathroom.
Turning the faucet on I slowly stripped from my sweat infuseduniform as the water warmed, filling the room with smoke and steam;lukewarm droplets of water cascaded down my neck relaxing my mindcausing my eyes to shut. Anything previous up to this point fades asthe day seemed like an illusion; sadly I knew the truth that itwasn't and Dana was still outside waiting for me to return with thismysterious friend Mackenzie.
Falling back into reality I finished this little therapy session, turning off the water and ringing out any remaining water from mylong brunette hair that started banana curling at the end.Clearing the mirror of steam I stared at my reflection from thefoggy mirror; my normally light blue eyes were a seemingly odd mix ofa grayish stormy sky blue with green about my iris.
Shaking my head and not thinking anymore about it I wrapped my towelin my petite five foot frame, heading back to the confines of my room putting on a pair of over-sized jeans, decorated in a chaoticsmear of paint and food stained as the jeans where ripped in severalarea's as if it was the style of the brand.
Peaking my head out of a gray tank top and shuffling my hair in aarray of wise to make it sit properly; I heard laughter coming fromthe front porch just outside my door. Cautiously I opened the entryway.
"Ay! There you are Carter. I want you to meet someone; CarterPierce this is Mackenzie Fey. Mackenzie, Carter." Dana announcedwhen she spotted me peaking through the door.
"Hi." Spoke the young girl from across the porch.
Icould feel my throat closing and my stomach clenched as my sightfell upon the young girl putting in awe as I couldn't formulate asingle thing to say. I mean She was no supermodel, but I'm sure heads do turn when she passes by on the street. Mackenzie shewas classically beautiful, as her large liquid blue eyes held such anserenity that it was impossible for me to look away and not beingheld prisoner, her cheekbones weren't scultured as her face wassweetly heartshaped and her nose was a little too big to be perfect, but there was undeniable beauty to her features and perhaps that'swhat held me so captivated.
Mackenziewas beautiful and I was screwed.
