"Whatdo you mean you can't come? What happened to being by my sidethroughout this whole entire thing?" Mackenzie's echoed rangthrough the speakers of my cell making my ears ring.
"AndI want to be there Mackenzie but you got a last minute appointmentand I'm stuck at work Kenz. I can't just leave." I spokeapologetically feeling both upset and a bit ticked off with thesituation because I did want to be with Mackenzie at the doctorsappointment like I had promised.
Todayout of all day was the one Planned Parenthood had available for thisweek for Mackenzie to come in and take a pregnancy test, which camewith this inconvenience and as much as I did want to be there withMackenzie I knew that the nurse wouldn't grant me access to theback for a simple piss test.
"ThenI'll make a different appointment so that you can be here."Mackenzie stuttered wanting to back out from all of this; I couldhear the nervousness in her voice.
"No;Kenzie you got this. I'm only a call away and I bet by the time I'moff work you'll have the results I'll already if most likely behome." I explained trying to keep her calm.
"Okay, fine. I just really wish you were here Carter." Mackenzie pleaded.
"Youneed me there to watch you piss on a stick Kenzie? I think you canmanage that all by yourself kid. You're a big girl." I chuckledtrying to make sure Mackenzie doesn't psych herself out of going.
"Fuckoff Carter." Mackenzie laughed through the other end of thespeaker.
"Yeah, you'll be fine." I commented shaking my head holding back mylaughter.
"Haha,Love you." Mackenzie laughed.
"Iknow." I replied dryly.
"Sayit back loser!" Mackenzie pushed since I haven't returned theaffectionate statement not once.
"Nah,I got to go. I'll see you soon Kenz." I parted before hanging upfrom the call and placing the device in my backpocket.
"Everythingokay?" Ask my co-worker Ronald Tillman; Ron for short as he camefrom the corner exiting the kitchen.
"Yeah,my friends a little nervous, doctors appointment and she wanted me tobe there." I answered trying to not over dramatize the situation.
"Iseverything alright?" Ron asked.
"Shouldbe; it's not really business to share but my friend Kenzie, the girlI was just on the phone with has an appointment at Planned Parenthoodto see if there's a bun in the oven or not." I sighed trying toformulate my words without the need to drag the conversation on witha rant.
"Oh."Ron replied unethusuatically as he shrugged his shoulders beforewalking away to attend to whatever needed tending to as a janitorsjob is never done, there always seemed to be something that neededdusting or scrubbed in a resturant.
Itwas barely 9:30am and time felt like seconds took forever to changelately and days just dragged about as if to prolong moments whichconstantly tested my patience as I had other places I'd rather be ordoing something else; like being with Mackenzie like I had promisedbut sadly fate wasn't on the same time zone as I was.
Eventhrough I was irritated with how slow time appeared to be progressingI was also amazed at how fast it had gone by as well; summer ended inheartbeats and it was already September which meant October andNovember shortly after and I couldn't wrap my mind around it.
My cell phone unexpectedly rang again from my back pocket but thistime the caller I.D showed that it was my mother calling, I hesitatedwither or not to answer the call but I knew it had to be somethingimportant because normally my mother never called me while I waswork. Regardless I took the call.
