Our story is about a town, a small town, and the people who live in the town. From a distance, it presents itself like so many other small towns all over the world Safe.Decent.Innocent.Get closer, though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath. The name of our town is Riverdale. And our story begins, I guess, with what the Blossom twins did this summer. On the Fourth of July, just after dawn, Jason and Cheryl Blossom drove out to Sweetwater River for an early morning boat ride.
"Are you scared, Jason?"
The next thing we know happened for sure is that Dilton Doiley, who was leading Riverdale's Boy Scout Troop on a bird watching expedition, came upon Cheryl by the river's edge.
"Jason"
Riverdale Police dragged Sweetwater River for Jason's body, but never found it.
"If he is dead, Hal, I hope in those last moments he suffered.May Jason Blossom burn in hell."
So a week later, the Blossom family buried an empty casket and Jason's death was ruled an accident, as the story that Cheryl told made the rounds.
That Cheryl dropped a glove in the water, and Jason reached down to get it, and accidentally tipped the boat, and panicked, and drowned.
Unbeknown to everyone in town, Amethyst Cooper and Archie Andrews were secretly hooking up all summer. Amethyst, although knowing her twin, Betty, was in love with the Andrews boy, continued to see him. There were many instances in which both Amethyst and Archie felt guilty about hiding their relationship, yet neither did anything to end it for the love they felt was real for the two.
Despite their effort to keep their secret safe. On that day of July Fourth, as Cheryl and Jason descended on a boat ride that would end Jason's life, Amethyst and Archie had made the mistake to sleep with each other there in the open, no protection whatsoever. While one life "ended" another was made. After their blissful experience, as they were ready to depart, the two teens heard a gunshot go off yet decided to keep quiet.
As for us, we were still talking about the "July Fourth tragedy" on the last day of summer vacation, when a new mystery rolled into town.
Hermione Lodge and her daughter, Veronica, arrived at their new home.
"Now brace yourself, the apartment's small, a pied-a-terre but.." Hermione said to Veronica,
"Quality always." They said in unison. With the introduction of Smithers, Veronica was sent off to Pop's Diner to pick up their order of food.
On the other side of Town at the Cooper household, Betty Cooper, alongside Kevin Keller, was getting ready to go to Pop Tate's with her best friend Archie Andrews, who unbeknownst to he was in deep with her sister, whom was working her shift at Pop's.
"Are you excited, nervous?" Kevin asked her.
Betty looked to him with a smile on her face. "Both. I haven't seen him all summer." she said.
"Which is why nerves are acceptable but we agreed Betty, it's time. You like him, he likes you..."
"Well, then why Kevin, hasn't he ever said or done anything?"
"Because, Archie's swell, but like most millennial straight guys, he needs to be told what he wants. So tell him, finally."
"Well, we'll see. I mean, it depends..." Betty trails off.
Kevin then looked out the window "Oh my god!" He shouted. Betty turned to look at what had caught his attention.
"What?" she asked. " Game-changer, Archie got hot!"
