Konoha

"Can you train with me, nii-san?"

"Mmm. Maybe later Sasuke."

Itachi Uchiha walked through the woods outside Konoha's gates, his little brother perched on his shoulders.

"That's what you ALWAYS say Itachi!" He whined. "And it NEVER happens!"

"Oh come on, just count yourself lucky I agreed to take you out here. If it weren't for me-" Itachi broke off suddenly, and stopped, his hand going to his kunai holster.

"Wh-what is it?" Sasuke whispered, noting his brothers change in demeanor.

"I'm not sure." Itachi said uneasily. "Just... stay quiet."

The brothers stayed absolutely still- Sasuke hardly daring to breathe.

Itachi suddenly whirled around, his kunai at the ready, as a large wolf limped out of the woods. His black and red fur was wet with blood and sweat, but what really alarmed the older Uchiha was the child on his back.

Her clothes were torn and stained and her silver hair was matted with blood.

"Please...." The wolf moaned, stumbling towards the brothers. "Help us..."
Itachi took a deep breath, and as soon as he saw the wolf's mangled hind leg, he put his knife back.

"Sasuke get down." He said calmly.

The young Uchiha dismounted and Itachi gently scooped the strange child, quietly taking in her injuries as well as her wolfish features.

"Are you strong enough to follow me?" The eldest questioned the wolf.

"Yeah, yeah, I think so." He managed. "Lead the way."

Itachi slowly made his way back into the village, being careful not to jar his charge, while Sasuke trailed behind him next to the wolf, trying to encourage him to hang on.
They passed through Konoha's gates just in time for Kurai to stumble and fall, his fur slick with sweat.

"Come on." Sasuke coaxed. "Just a little further!"

"I-I can't...."

"Sure you can!" The little boy smiled. "I know you can!"

Kurai laid there panting for a minute, then slowly managed to stand on his three good legs.
"Yeah!" The boy cheered. "Told you!"

"What's going on?"

Itachi turned to find a dark-haired male standing before him. A Jonin, by the name of Yuri Kenzaki.

"He asked for help." He said softly, looking down at the wolf girl's face. "And the little one.... she's lost so much blood...."

Yuri glanced from the child to the wolf's pained face. "Alright, take them to the hospital. And make it quick, hm?"

With a good natured smile, the shinobi went ahead to inform the medics.
Itachi sighed in a relief. "Come on. With Yuri on our side, you'll get the best treatment Konoha can offer."

Before she even opened her eyes, Rita knew she was in a different place.

She wasn't lying on the cool floor of the den, she wasn't curled up with the other wolves of her pack, she wasn't even OUTSIDE. And the scents she was picking up weren't familiar at all.
Well. Except for one.

"K-Kurai-nii...?" She said forcing her eyes open.

"Thank Lupa, you're awake!" Her wolf brother gasped.
