By three AM Calum has reached peak drunkenness. I've watched him make out with at least seven different girls throughout the night and never have his hands not been gripping some sort of alcoholic beverage.
Harry and I kissed once, and very briefly. There's just something so weird about kissing Harry in front of people. It's as if he's a piece of art which has to be appreciated to its fullest in a room alone.
We are seated on the armchair in the living room, Harry on the cushion and me sideways on his lap with my legs slung over one of the armrests, when I catch sight of Calum stumbling over in the direction of the front door. I turn to Harry. "I'm gonna go check up on Calum. I should get home soon so I'm gonna go tell him I'm leaving."
"All right," Harry smiles sweetly. "Just come back so I can give you a proper goodbye."
"Wouldn't want to pass on that." I push myself off his lap and my head spins for a second when I stand to my feet. I find Calum sitting out front down by the curb. "Calum?"
"Go away." I'm taken back by the harshness in his voice.
"No." I take a seat beside him, one leg folded under myself. "Why are you doing? I've never seen you this wasted before."
"I'm just trying to live, Chandler. God, why can't I just live?" I notice how glossy his eye are and the shine on his cheeks under the glow of the moon.
"Have you been crying?"
"No," he rushes, and he wipes the back of his hand over his eyes. "I just...I just don't get it. Why did she do it?"
"I don't know."
"It just makes me so angry!" he exasperates and I jump a bit when his beer bottle smashes against the asphalt and I watch the liquid spread around the shards of glass on the ground. "I thought we were doing good."
"I'm sorry."
"I loved her—I still love her." I watch as tears well up in his eyes and he presses his hands flat against them to try to stop it. "I want her back, Chandler. I miss her."
"I know." I'm unsure of what to do and how to act right now because I have never seen Calum like this. His wellbeing hasn't really ever been something I've had to pay much attention to. "I think...I think that you need to take some time, and then you will feel better. You won't be in love with her forever, Calum."
"What do you know?" he scoffs. "You've never been in love."
"Thank you for the reminder."
"You've never loved someone like I have and no one has ever loved you like I love her."
"Wow. I came out here to make sure you're all right—but I see you clearly don't need me." I stand up and dust myself off. "Now if you're done belittling me I'm going to go home."
