"Look, it's hard to explain," Lukas finally pulled out of the parking lot of the crime scene to head back to the precinct. He drove the long way and kept his hands tight around the steering wheel, "I did die, we both know that."

Lucifer looked pained for a moment at the memory, of holding Lukas as he took his final breath, "Yes." He cleared his throat, "I remember it clearly."

"Right," The detective sighed, turning down a street. "Well, I didn't go to Hell, as you know, but I didn't go to the Silver City. I was- I don't know, everything was white and there was a whole lot of... Nothing..."

The Devil breathed in sharply, "You were in Purgatory." At Lukas' startled glance, he continued, "The section you were in has never been used before, hence why you didn't see anyone. It's a room for people my dear old dad can't decide what to do with. It really is a room full of nothing."

Lukas let out a breath between his teeth, "Great. Anyways, I woke up five years ago in Michigan perfectly fine except for, you know," He cleared his throat, glaring out towards the road. "God didn't exactly make me a new man."

Lucifer turned towards him, "You still have-" He waved his hand towards the detective.

"My scars?" The brown-eyed man raised an eyebrow, "Yeah, Sammy, I do," He moved the collar of his long-sleeved shirt to reveal a long thin pink line that went from his shoulder and down his arm, disappearing beneath the fabric. It was mirrored on his other side and the way Lukas was holding himself showed that there were more.

The Devil reached his arm over and gently ran his fingers over the scar, smiling softly at the way Lukas, after all these years, relaxed under his touch. "I'm sorry, Lukas," He murmured. "If I could take them away, I would."

"I know, Lucifer," Lukas blinked and cleared his throat. "Um, we're here. I need to finish setting up my desk, so," He turned off the engine, waiting for the club owner to get out of the vehicle, before locking the car and hurrying into the precinct.

--

"Stupid, stupid," Lukas cursed himself as he sat heavily at his desk, putting his head in his hands. "You came here to see him, not to fall in love with him again. I'm such an idiot..."

"Are you okay?" Ella tapped his shoulder, smiling when he flinched in surprise.

"Oh, Ms. Lopez," He leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair to calm himself. "I'm sorry, yes, I'm alright. Is there something I can help you with?"

"Oh, no, I was just wondering if you wanted to talk more. I mean, if you don't want to I can come another time," She hurried, putting her hands up with a chuckle.

"No, it's fine, I'd love to talk more," He pulled the chair next to his desk over and gestured for her to take a seat. "I just need to finish setting up my desk."

"Cool," She sat down, crossing her legs. "So, how come you came here to work at LA?"

Lukas paused at that, tilting his head, "Part of it was to see an ex of mine." He shrugged his shoulders, "We didn't end on bad terms or anything, and not even by our choice. I just- I dunno- thought I'd show them I'm alright?" He smiled, shaking his head at himself, taking another little potted plant, this time a fly trap, from the box. It was labeled 'from: CJ' and Lukas looked exasperated to see it. "Plus, Thomas kept talking about the hospitals here and stuff, so," He shrugged again. "We moved here."

Ella smiled widely, resting her chin on her hand, "You and Thomas must be close to move here because he liked the hospitals here."

The detective looked down, "Yeah, we're best friends. We do nearly everything together."
