Elizabeth took Joel inside her small home and managed to do so without anyone noticing the strangely dressed man. She led him over to the rocking chair beside the fire and stoked the embers then added more coal to the fire.
Joel looked cold, he just sat and stared ahead of him. Elizabeth went over to the stove and placed a tin kettle on top of the black plate waiting for the water to boil. She only ever made coffee in the morning but this guy looked like he needed it.
Joel sat and looked into the fire trying to comprehend what on earth had taken place. He had set out with the guys to go for a meeting, stopped because of fog; he had walked through it and into the past.
Joel sighed as he placed his elbows on his knees and tipped his head into his hands and slowly ran his fingers through his dark hair.
"I'm dreaming aren't I? I have to be, it's a fuckin' nightmare."
Elizabeth pulled up one of the chairs around the battered rectangular dining table and sat before Joel handing him a mug of coffee.
"Here take this, it will help."
Joel looked into her brown eyes, he could see the kindness within them, as he reached his hand out for the mug he held onto her hands which were around the mug.
"You're real aren't you?"
Elizabeth nodded as she smiled at him with pity.
"I'm as real as you are, but you're not like me, like us in the town are you?"
Joel suddenly had a thought and let go of
Elizabeth's hands that fortunately still had hold of the mug so it didn't spill. Reaching into his jacket pocket Joel
pulled out his mobile phone.
"Look, I'm gonna call the guy's."
Elizabeth was wide-eyed now, never before had she seen something like that.
Joel held his iPhone up to find a good signal but couldn't find one at all, he walked all around the room searching for some form of signal and then his battery went dead.
"No, no, no!"
He shouted as he kept hitting the phone with his other hand. Elizabeth was very worried he was going to make himself ill. She took the phone out of his hand and carefully guided him to the table to sit down.
Once they were sitting she looked at the strange object in her hand, it was fascinating she had never seen anything like it in her life.
"What is it?"
She asked in total wonderment. Although he found this very hard.
"You can make phone calls, message people, Snapchat..." He paused because he knew he was totally confusing her. he explained in an easier way about telephones but this made
Elizabeth angry as she knew what a phone was and this certainly wasn't one plus only rich people had phones but they were on a wall and looked nothing like this strange thing. She laid it on the table as this was obviously something that would cause an argument already.
"So where are you from? 'Cause you ain't from round here."
Joel smiled at least this was still USA, that was a start.
"I'm from California. But actually i am Mexican, but I was born in California"
"Ah, a Californian boy, I can hear it in your accent yes. So what do you do, do you own a company and have men working for you, a mill maybe or a ship builder's that is a California type of business."
Joel smiled and shook his head. She sounded so innocent, if all this was true and he didn't wake up from this dream it would be lovely to know someone like
Elizabeth, she was kind and caring but also a strong willed girl he could see that now.
"I think I told you I'm a singer."
Elizabeth laughed at him.
"And I told you, I think I hit your head too hard. How do you expect to earn money to live by singing?"
Joel just smiled and watched her as she pushed the mug before him; he took a sip of the now lukewarm coffee. As he took a sip he spat it back into the cup.
"What the hell is that shit?"
Elizabeth wasn't impressed at all, she had helped this stranger into her home and given him some of what little coffee she had and he had just insulted what she had given him. Elizabeth snatched the mug away.
"Well I am sorry I don't have all the riches you do but I think I would rather be poor than as rude and disrespectful as you are."
Joel now understood the her anger. He held his hands up trying to excuse himself.
"No, no, it's just........ let me buy you a nicer jar of coffee, where is your shop?"
Elizabeth looked him up and down and shook her head.
"Coffee Mr. Pimentel comes in bags, the store is at the other end of town and if you left the house looking like that either you would be locked up in the asylum or Father Smith would have you locked up as a devil worshiper."
Joel looked around at the sparsely furnished room, it was by the look of it a kitchen, dining room and what would be the lounge all in one then looked at
Elizabeth's clothing and then his own. No he wasn't dressed the part and if this was his dream then why not get into the spirit of it and live the life, because tomorrow he would wake up in his own house, with his own duvet and central heating where he could flip the television on and live in reality.
"Well you can't keep me in your house forever can you Elizabeth, how can I go out?"
Elizabeth thought for a moment then she walked over to a door on the opposite side of the room and opened it to reveal a set of stairs.
"Follow me; I still have some of the boy's things they left."
Joel followed her up the dark enclosed staircase and as they got to the top he saw a room in front of them a room to the left of them and a room to the right.
Elizabeth turned to the left and opened the door, as they walked in Joel looked around seeing two large beds with very warn looking blankets on them, Elizabeth
had gone to a little cupboard where a couple of shirts were hanging.
You look about the same size as our Bruce was."
She threw him a shirt and he held it up to him. Maybe it had been white once upon a time but it was almost pale brown now. He tried not to sound too disgusted so he wouldn't offend Elizabeth again.
"Erm, yeah thanks."
Elizabeth went to a chest of drawers now and looked back at Joel again.
"I think you are about the size of our Ryan for trousers."
She handed the trousers to him and he rolled his eyes, they were just as bad as the shirt, the black had faded to a dirty grey and looked very thin as if they had been worn for years.
Elizabeth went to walk out of the room as Joel spoke.
"So who are Bruce and Ryan?"
"Ach, two of the boys, Our James is the eldest, then Theo, and then you have Bruce and Henry. My sisters are Patricia and Amy, twins. Patricia married in the spring and Amy the year before."
"And your Mum and Dad?"
Elizabeth stopped at the door but remained looking ahead at the closed door before her.
"Mom died having the twins and Dad spent the next ten years drinking himself to death. So it was just us really................. After our James got Patricia married off the boys all went to New York City to find work."
Joel now felt sorry for Elizabeth, she had a big family and yet was all alone, just like he was, two lost souls brought together by a mysterious fog.
"And you Elizabeth are you married?"
Elizabeth giggled at him.
"At my age Mr Pimentel? I'm nineteenth I'm far too young. Plus my life was to look after everyone and now they've gone."
Joel could hear an air of vulnerability in her voice.
"Nineteenth isn't young to get married, I'm eighteen....... But I guess you have me to look after for a while."
Elizabeth turned to laugh at him but as she did she saw him standing with his trousers round his ankles, his top off and the shortest and strangest pair of long Ryan's she had ever seen in her life. What's more he didn't seem worried about her seeing his body at all.
"See, I'm a waif and stray you can care for me for a while."
Elizabeth turned her head very quickly as the heat rose up her cheeks.
"Mr Pimentel you could at least have waited till I left the room." Joel laughed, this was going to be quite fun and then when he woke up he would have so much to tell the guys, they would love it. Maybe it could be a new video who knows?
"My apologies Elizabeth, I just thought with all your brothers you would be used to all this but hey we are all Gods creatures are we not?"
Elizabeth started to walk down the stairs.
"If Father Smith saw you now in my house nearly naked you wouldn't be one of God's creatures at all Mr Pimentel... I'm going to prepare dinner."
As Elizabeth made her way down the stairs Joel quickly moved to the door and called down after her.
"Elizabeth it's Joel, Mr Pimentel is my father I'm not that old!"
Joel finished dressing himself into this...pic below...

He liked Elizabeth, and she was so caring and nice. If he could only meet a girl like her in real life he would be happy. Oh well he thought, this is a nice dream, one to cherish for a while.
