He went out into the hallway, quietly closing the door so he wouldn't wake Sam up. He dialed the number for CPS and reported everything that was going on, and was given a time and location to meet with them. They needed to interview Sam separately and get as much information as they could before bringing his father in.
"Can you come in tomorrow? Say... 3:45?"
"I am currently in the hospital with him, we don't have an official release date. The doctor told us he will have to stay a night or two, or until they think he is safe to leave." He hears the woman on the other side of the phone sigh and clicking of a mouse.
"Okay, since you don't have a specific date that you will be available, I will just put it on the file that we have an unspecified date, but to see you as soon as possible. I will try my best to find information so I can contact the guardian."
"Alright, thank you." Alan closes his phone and opens the door to the room, but forgets for a moment that Sam was asleep. When he closed the door, Sam jumped, waking up frantically and panicking. "Shh, it's okay, it's just me." Alan stopped dead in his tracks, feeling awful for startling Sam so bad. "I'm sorry," he said. Sam looked at him, his eyes were wide open and he was sitting up, leaning on his elbows.
"What time is it?" He asks.
Alan looked at the clock on the wall, "Around 8. You fell asleep as soon as you finished eating."
"Oh," Sam rubbed his eyes, "What were you doing in the hall?"
Alan hesitated for a minute, causing Sam to grow worried. "I called Child Protective Services. We are going to meet them when you get out. They need to interview you."
"Will you be there with me?"
"Only for the first part. They will need to interview you separately to make sure all the information is accurate. I shared as much as I could, but the rest you will have to tell them."
"I don't think I can do it. They'll contact my dad. I can't see him again. I can't," Sam lays his face in his hands and begins to hiccup which means he's about to cry. But he didn't just cry. He was screaming and yelling things, all Alan could understand was, "He'll hurt me," and "Not safe". Multiple nurses came in after they heard the yelling and began to try to calm Sam down, eventually giving him an IV with some sort of medicine that made him almost seem emotionless. Alan stood there staring at him, trying to put the pieces together about all the things he has gathered about Sam's father.
The words, "not safe", are circling in his mind. He begins to feel a sheet of sweat covering his face, trying to figure out what he needs to do. CPS is already searching for his dad, it might be too late. He can call CPS again, but if they've contacted them, there's no going back.
"What am I going to do..." Alan sits down and brainstorms for hours and hours, but soon dozes off.
