[Four months later]

Alan opens the door to his room and puts his things down. As he puts his coat on the coat hanger, Sam walks into the living room. "Hi, Mr. Shore." He's stuffing potato chips in his mouth and flops down on the couch.

"I've told you a million times. You can call me Alan, or anything other than 'Mr. Shore'."

"Alright." Sam sits for a second, thinking, and looks at Alan and says, "Richard."

"What?"

"You said I can call you whatever I want. Now you're Richard."

They both laugh as they sit in Alan's living room and continue to think about what Sam should call Alan. They decide just to call him Alan, so no one gets confused. Alan turns on the TV and flips through channels, deciding what to watch. He stops when he sees the show he knows Sam likes.

"Yes!!!" Sam raises his hands in the air and smiles when he sees that Alan turned House on. Alan chuckles as he sets the remote down on the coffee table and looks at Sam and sees his wrists and the small scars.

It's been four months since everything happened. He's been going to therapy twice a week, he's seeing a psychiatrist, and best of all, Alan is working on finding a home for Sam, and he's thinking about taking him in as his own. He hasn't made any final decisions, but he knows that finding a good home for Sam is the most important thing right now. He has been thinking about adopting him ever since CPS called saying they are going to start searching for families looking to adopt. Alan knows it's a big step, and he would have to clean up his act, but he's willing to do it. He feels a true connection to Sam and sees him as a son. He wants to continue to protect him and make sure there is someone in his life that loves him.
