Elijah knew that his mother expected him home by four pm, even though he was a twenty-year-old grown man. Living at home with his mother while in college was frustrating, he couldn't bring his boyfriend, Milo, over because his mother expected him to be studying and not worrying about romance.
Elijah had tried to keep up to his mother's standards and found it easy enough in high school where the other boys all wanted sex and keep Elijah disinterested. But it had changed in college. In college, he joined his HERO organization and met Milo, another asexual homoromantic man like himself. Milo had caught his eye originally because his smile made Elijah smile, too, which was rare. When they'd all gone about introducing themselves, Milo had been excited to also meet another like him and the two had connected instantly.
By the next meeting two weeks later they'd already been on three amazing dates and were openly dating.
Now Junior year of college and the two had been through so much, but both felt like there was nothing they couldn't do together and Elijah was set on figuring out a way to ask Milo to marry him, much to his mother's disdain. "You have a C in Business Marketing, maybe instead of working to pay for a ring you should be studying so you can support the two of you," Elijah's mother had scolded when he'd brought it up.
He'd only had the C because of an error in the system, which he knew, but he hadn't wanted to fight with his mom about it. She'd just have to get over it. While it bothered him that she wasn't outright supportive, he took care that his father was always on his side, even going as far as to help Elijah plan the date to propose to Milo.
Knocking on Milo's apartment door, Elijah was nervous. Three years of bliss and more was on the line if Milo didn't feel the same way, but tonight was the night Elijah was going to pop the question. He'd been saving for months to buy the ring and had planned this night down to a T.
"Hey, babe," Milo greeted, kissing Elijah's cheek and letting him in.
"Hey, are you ready for our date?" Elijah asked, following Milo to the kitchen to hop up on the counter and set the grocery bags down, too.
"You betcha! I'm actually really excited because they're dropping another season of Daredevil and that's the perfect thing to binge watch while we make dinner," Milo said, walking into the living room to get Netflix set up. Elijah slid off the counter and got to work on getting out all of the pans they'd need to make dinner and once that was done Milo joined him and together they made pasta con broccoli, Daredevil season two playing the background. With the pasta being made, the two also made cupcakes to bake while they ate. Popping them in the oven, the two went to the living room to watch Daredevil and eat.
"You know," Elijah said as they sat down, snuggling up beside Milo. "I don't think I remember the first date we had."
Milo scoffed, abruptly sitting up straighter. "We went ice skating! How could you not remember, it was the first time you held my hand?"
"We've been together for a long time, we've gone through so much," Elijah shrugged. "It's kinda all blending together."
"Is there anything else you can't remember, like our first kiss?" Milo asked, slightly irritated.
Elijah nervously laughed, he hadn't wanted to make Milo mad, just reminisce about how much history they had. Of course, he wouldn't forget their first kiss. Not when they'd both bashed their heads the first time. "No, I remember our first kiss really well. I took you out to dinner and when I walked you home you kissed me when I was trying to kiss you and we smacked heads." Elijah said, grabbing Milo's hand and entwining their fingers. "How could I forget that?"
Milo blushed and Elijah's heart stuttered. He honestly couldn't see himself with anyone else and so he kissed his hand and went back to watching Daredevil, the butterflies in his stomach fluttering, but the question ahead not as scary as it had been.
When the timer went off, Milo got up to take the cupcakes out of the oven to cool and Elijah took their dirty plates to the sink to be washed. "How long should we let them cool for?"
"I'd say about twenty minutes," Elijah answered, taking in a deep, delighted breath at the smell of the pumpkin spice cupcakes. Milo loved pumpkin spice and unlike Elijah, who preferred the springtime, absolutely adored "spooky season." Needless to say, nearly everything Milo ate was centered around fall, pumpkin spice being his flavor of choice for the season.
"Sounds good to me, episode three is almost over, too, so we can start preparing the frosting once it's done," Milo said.
Elijah and Milo sat back down on the couch, cuddling, and Elijah's hands start sweating, his heart rate accelerated far more than he'd like it to be. Milo holds his hand and then looks down at him. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just hot," Elijah responded, awkward that Milo noticed. Would he guess what Elijah had planned? Is the surprise spoiled?
"Oh, well let me turn the furnace down then," Milo said, getting up.
"Yeah, thanks, babe."
"No problem, sweetie, you should have said something sooner if you were hot, you dork," Milo joked, flopping back down on the couch and pulling Elijah into a quick kiss. Elijah "What's the deal with you anyway? You've been pretty silent tonight. Is school going okay?"
"Yeah, school is fine," Elijah said, running his hand through Milo's curly hair.
"Is it your mother?" Milo asked softly.
Elijah had to admit that a part of his nervousness tonight was, in fact, his mother. She never seemed to like Milo and that upset Elijah. He loved Milo and couldn't imagine life without him. His mother thought that he was foolishly wasting his time because his feelings would change when he got out of college and experienced the real world. But to Elijah, Milo was a part of his real world, a part that needed to be with him. "Kind of, she's mad that I'm here. She thinks I'm wasting my time with you."
Milo frowned and Elijah regreted saying that as silence filled the room and the episode ended. Milo cleared his throat, dispelling the awkward tension. "Let's go frost the cupcakes."
Elijah hopped up and agreed. The two grabbed the frosting and the frosting funnels. "This is going to be good," Elijah cheered, smiling widely at Milo. His mother wouldn't ruin this, he wouldn't let her. His father loved Milo and his mother could just get over it.
Milo smiled widely and easily Elijah and Milo were laughing and together they frosted the pumpkin-spice cupcakes. It took no time at all and when Milo turned around to put dirty dishes in the sink, Elijah slipped the ring he had in his pocket onto the top of the icing on the nearest cupcake.
"Milo," Elijah cooed, getting down on his knee.
"Yeah?" Milo asked, turning around from the sink and gasping at the cupcake. "W-what?"
"Milo, I know that no matter what I can't live without you."
"Eli you're not really doing this! Yes!" Milo exclaimed, his hands covering his mouth as he realized Elijah hadn't asked the question yet. They both laughed obnoxiously as tears filled Milo's eyes.
Elijah beamed at Milo. "You've been with me through so much and there is nothing we haven't-"
"Eli, yes!" Milo shouted again, making Elijah laugh harder.
"Let me finish," Elijah joked, unable to stop grinning.
"I'm sorry, I just, yes."
"There isn't anything that I could imagine ever doing with anyone else and I don't want to spend my life with anyone else. No one makes me laugh as hard or makes me feel so secure or as happy. Milo... will you marry me?"
Milo collapsed to his knees and hugged Elijah, "Yes! Oh my god, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!"
And then they married and lived happily ever after.
