(Chara's POV)
Even if I couldn't use Overwrite anymore, I still wanted to escape. There was no way that I was going to be staying with a filthy human. I walked up to the door and opened it slowly. Outside, was a pretty small space, resembling what looked like a living room. At least it had a couch. On the couch sat the girl. She was writing something in a book. I walked over to the couch and plopped down beside her. Right now, I was in an unknown environment and that girl was my source of information. If the world really was so different from what I'm used to, I could die trying to escape. I glanced over at her.
She wasn't any taller than me. Shorter actually. Her hair was long and she wore pretty normal clothes it seemed. Though they were quite dirty. She really didn't seem that dangerous to me. But I could be wrong. What if she had some sort of strong power that I didn't know of yet? I'd have to play nice for a little while and try not to get into any conflicts. Especially with my injury. I decided to try some small talk to maybe make her tell me something. But before I even opened my mouth, she slammed her book shut and looked at me with her dull eyes.
"So... It's almost time, huh?" she asked.
"Huh?"
"There is mostly one thing you need to know... you can trust some people in this world, but far from everyone. Many of them will try to kill you on sight, so stay cautious" she explained. My eyes widened. Had she read my mind or something?
"What?"
"Ah, nothing... you should go to bed, it's getting late..." she said getting up from the couch with her book in one hand. I glanced through one of the windows. It had actually begun to get dark.
Before I had the chance to get up, she spoke again, gaining my attention.
"Oh, I just remembered... I didn't really get your name," she said, leaning against the back of the couch. I turned my head to see her standing in the doorway.
"Why should I tell you?" I growled.
"Well, you could either do that... or I'll just have to use your fantastic nickname..." she said, obviously being sarcastic. I thought of it for a moment.
After all, she did to help me... she does deserve to know the name of her future killer... A grin spread itself across my face as it crossed my mind. I looked back up at her.
"It's Chara..." I said in a low tone.
"It is a pleasure to meet you Chara, feel free to call me Echo," she said, standing up straight.
"Is that really your name?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"That is what everyone else calls me... and... well...good night, Chara..." she said simply, walking through a door. I got up and headed back to the room where I had been sleeping. But instead of going to bed, I walked over to a window.
I'll wait... until the night aids my escape...
I kept waiting by the window. After a while, it was almost pitch black. I walked to the door as a smile crept onto my face. I made sure to open the door carefully, listening to any little sound.
Nothing could be heard so I snuck through the living room searching for the door leading to the outside.
I could see four doors. The one leading to the room I had been in, the one Echo had gone through earlier and two others. I opened the one on the opposite wall of the other doors, feeling a calm breeze on my face.
The smile widened as I walked outside, closing the door quietly behind me. I began to walk.
It didn't take long until I reached a river. It was pretty wide, and I didn't know how deep it was.
Carefully, I sat down by it, summoning a knife. I stuck it into the water and was shocked as it was like ripped out of my hand. There were currents here. Strong as heck.
I decided to look for another way over as I saw a plank. It was placed over the river like a bridge. I was just about to test it out, as I heard a twig snap.
Immediately I turned around. Someone pushed me to the ground. The side of my head was hit against something hard and blunt, I'd say a rock.
Groaning and hissing at the pain, I tried to sit up. But a foot stamped down on my chest, right on the wound. I gasped as my breath was taken away. Despite it being so dark, I managed to see my attacker.
It was a man. Though it was hard to see, I could make out some details about him. Such as some sort of mask over his mouth, dark eyes, piercings, and a thick jacket. He was glaring at me.
I lifted my arm to summon my knife. But before it had the chance to take form, my attacker stabbed my arm. An immense pain spread through my arm and I screamed, before clenching my teeth. The attacker looked at me before raising a knife into the air. I unintentionally closed my eyes, as I awaited the finishing blow to come.
But to my surprise, I felt something wet land on my face. I slowly opened my eyes to see Echo. She had stopped the knife with her bare hand. It was her blood which had fallen onto my face. She grimaced at the pain before she kicked my ambusher in the stomach.
"Don't you have anything better to do than attacking those who are weaker than you?" she asked them with an emotionless tone. If I hadn't been in such pain, I wouldn't have let her call me weak. Such a bitch.
"Stay out of this..." he said, raising his knife again. His voice was dark and utterly nasty.
"Why should I? I'd rather be right here, right now," she told him, being entirely calm. The man growled before throwing himself over her. She grabbed onto his arm and pulled in it to make his jump furthered, right into the river. I saw him come up for a moment of air before disappearing again. Then I didn't see him come up anymore.
I just stared. The man had been taken just like my knife. What if I had been less careful? What if I had fallen in? My thoughts were interrupted as Echo sat down beside me.
"The currents in this river have an immense power. Fall in and you're dead unless you know how to handle them," she said as she was carefully pulling the knife out of my arm. I clenched my teeth.
As she had put the knife aside, I tried to get up. But the pain of my new wound and my old one made it unbearable. Echo must have seen that, because she put my unharmed arm around her shoulder and her other hand by my waist, supporting me back to her house. My stabbed arm just hung to my side as my head felt like it was throbbing. I couldn't really do much, but I felt tears slowly wandering down my cheeks. It was so pathetic, but Echo didn't really seem to notice or care anyway.
She kicked the door open carefully and lead me to the couch, helping me sit down on it. Then she went back to the door, closing it.
"I didn't expect this to happen... this wasn't what I saw..." she mumbled before entering a room.
I carefully lied down on my back, wiping away the tears.
The door to the room opened again and she came back out with a small kitchen towel, a bowl of water and some sort of cloth which hung from her thumb.
She sat down in front of the couch, putting everything down beside her. Slowly, she began pulling off my shirts, causing me to clench my teeth again. She seemed to be inspecting the wound on my chest, carefully putting her hand on it. Her hand was cold and sent a shiver down my spine, but it didn't really hurt. Then it traveled to the wound on my arm. I flinched at the contact and clenched my teeth. She removed her hand and began dipping some of the cloth in the water, starting to clean it. I couldn't help but let small sounds escape my lips as she did. When she finished, she tied the towel around it on my arm.
There wasn't as much pain anymore, except for the throbbing in my head.
Echo gently placed her hand under my bangs on my forehead. The coldness of her hand felt nice and I closed my eyes, the throbbing coming to a halt.
Something soft was placed over me, probably a blanket.
"I'm going to patch myself up. Sleep well" Echo said as she got up and walked away.
I pulled up the blanket further with one hand and carefully turned to my side.
My escape would have to wait a little bit longer...
