It was pretty dark outside and I saw lots of teens heading away from the party. The moon was high and shining and in the distance I could see a big bonfire. I assumed that's where we were headed. Meredith walked off to talk to some friends leaving me and Amelia to ourselves.
"So what's it like in California?" She asked and I tensed.
Terrible.
"It's fun. I really like it there." She smiles.
"I wanna go there one day. Hey! Maybe when this is over, you know, I could go visit you?" Her cheery attitude makes it hard for me to say anything to bring her down.
"Sure," I shrug.
I hope she forgets to visit.
"So what is there to do around here? I didn't really see much on the way in." I chuckle." Most of my ride was spent sleeping." Amelia's eyes grew large as she talked about her hometown. She described it pretty well and I was happy to learn they had a racetrack a few miles away. I could drive whenever I wanted.
Back in Cali, my friends and I would race after school all the time. My "best friend", some loser named Jack, taught me and I've been driving since the end of eighth grade. It was one of the only ways I could escape my house.
We got to the bonfire and mingled with a lot of the teens. I met a lot of the people I'd be going to school with and found a few guys that seemed cool enough to hang out with. A few girls tried giving me their number and I politely declined. All the little papers purposely put in my pocket were thrown into the bonfire.
It was around 11 o'clock and Amelia and I were sitting on a bench by the fire. We gave up trying to have conversations with people when 90% of them started to get tipsy and/or became flat out drunk.
"This is kinda boring, honestly." Amelia wrinkled her nose."Too much beer and not enough fun." She looked at me, the fire making her blue eyes eyes dance with specks of light.
"Do you want to get out of here?" She asked and I nodded. She stood up and held her hand out to me which I took and she pulled me back towards the house.
We walked back in silence. Amelia led me through the dark, but we didn't get to the house. She held a finger to her pink lips as we creeped towards the garage. I saw the lights out in the house so I figured we'd have a good chance of not getting caught
. Amelia rolled open the door and went inside. I heard something jingle and then an engine came to life.I stepped out of Amelia's way as she drove out of the garage and hopped in when she stopped next to me. I had no idea where we were going, but I didn't really care.
