I attempt to hide my burning face as we walk back to the house. I feel a mix of embarrassment and giddiness. Hunter is the first good looking boy this town has seen-well that I've seen- in a while. Everything he says is funny and my cheeks seem to be aflame at every second 'till we reach the front door. Mama gives me a glance as I excuse myself to use the restroom when we enter the kitchen.
I feel so ashamed for throwing my boot at him. That must've hurt like a cow being branded 100 times over.
In my defense, I didn't know him or what he was intending to do.
I just hope he forgives me soon. I don't want him to hate me. That would cause problems for Dad and Mama.
When I emerge from my bathroom, Mama calls me to the living room where Will, Meredith, and Hunter are already sitting down. I take a seat next to Meredith on the sofa. I'm not exactly comfortable sitting next to this new boy yet.
"I know Hunter has just arrived but your father has already spread to practically the whole town that he was arriving today," Mama rolled her eyes." So in honor of your arrival, sweet pea, we have invited a few families that you'd meet sooner or later along with the families of Amelia's friends -so you know some people before heading to school- to a dinner party."
Mama smiled warmly and wrung her hands. It was something she did when she got anxious on an answer. Hunter just nodded.
"Okay! That's fine with me." He shrugged and smiled back. Mama clapped her hands and sprang into action, giving each of us orders on what we needed to get from the store and what we needed to do around the house.

"I'm gonna go over to the drink aisle and pick up the sodas and beer," announced Meredith when we entered Reece's Grocery Store."Can you and Hunter go and pick up the food?"
She left before I could respond, leaving me alone with Hunter and the shopping cart.
"Well, let's go then I guess." I muttered and began making my way to the snack aisle. Hunter followed with the shopping cart.
"So is she always like that?" Hunter asks as we turn into the chip aisle. I chuckle.
"Only when she's a girl on a mission."
I put a hand on the shopping cart which makes Hunter stop and try to reach the Barbecue Lays on the top shelf. Unfortunately, my fingers graze the bag and my feet are already burning from standing on my tiptoes. I hate being short.
I feel a pair of arms snake around my waist and I'm lifted off the ground making me turn and wrap an arm around his neck. I watch him as I unconsciously grab the bag. He lowers me down and I turn my whole body towards him.
"Thanks." I tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear and put the bag into the cart. Hunter shrugs and we continue picking out various snacks down the aisle.
In the next aisle, Hunter is on the right side and I'm on the left looking for something called Harry's Mango Pineapple Salsa. I've never tried it before but it sounds delicious. About halfway down the aisle I finally spot the salsa. A big broken pickle jar lays on the ground next to the salsa section so I step carefully in front of it so I can get the salsa.
