Two questions. We were left with two questions that we have to bring home. While at the bus ride home, Eureka and I kept thinking about these two questions: What would happen to her in the end and what would happen to her after the end. The two seem to be asking the same thing but no. The first refers to the end of the story, while the second ask about the life after it. Sure, the first question could be easily answered by a reader of the book but it was too insane that I don’t want to believe it. Moreover, I don’t have an idea when would this “end” will happen so I secretly re-read the e-book copy that I have on my phone and turned it to the last page while Eureka was past asleep resting her head to my shoulder.
“Okay, Eureka why are we doing this?” Darwin asked Eureka brimming with bliss. This day reminds himof the first day they have met at the park. Only now, they were in a different park.
“What?” Eureka asked though she had a perfectly idea of what’s going on.
“This. Your surprise for me, the video you made for me and this....staring at the stars. Have I done something to reward me of this?”
“Maybe?” Eureka gently poked Darwin’s pointy nose as she went closer at him. For the briefest moment they stared at each other’s eyes and they were absolutely electric.
“Really? Electric?! Oh come on!” I thought to myself as if it was the first I have read this part. I liked this before but now, I feel anxious about it. But stillI continued to read it.
“Darwin,” she breathed heavily. “The thing is, you want something from me.”
“Uh huh? And what’s that?” Darwin has literally no idea what Eureka had in mind.
“You want change.” Eureka finally spilled. Eureka’s mind has made up and she was particularly sure that it was the right thing to do.
“Change, Eureka? What are you talking about?” Darwin scrunched his forehead.
“Remember the day you brought me back home because you were afraid that I couldn’t help myself?”
“Eureka, are you still mad at me about that? You know I only did it because I really care about you. I couldn’t just stand and watch you...”
“Watch me what, Darwin? Watch me face the world with the path I chose to? Darwin, you know what I want, what I dream?” her voice was still steady and calm.
“Of course I do, because I love you.” Darwin caressed the soft pink cheeks of Eureka as he expressed his feelings for her.
“Then, you’ll understand.”
“Understand what Eureka?”
“I am leaving this place.” Eureka blinked and a tear dropped to her cheeks dampening Darwin’s slender fingers.
