All I can hear at my apartment was the monotonous beat caused by the rain outside. It has been days now yet I haven’t talked to Eureka nor seen her. I tried visiting her on her work but she was surprisingly replaced quickly with another cashier. When I asked Kylie about her she just refuse to talk. She said Eureka told her not to. Every day after my classes I haven’t failed visiting her apartment trying to push my luck.
I remembered a question though I can’t particularly point who asked it; “If time machine would be invented would anybody use it to go to the future?” At first I thought heck yeah, why wouldn’t anyone? Then I realized the true meaning of that question-if time machine would be invented then one shall ask anybody to use it, people would probably use it to look back to their past, because what is more important was the present that they could change. It’s funny when a successful person was asked of what they want to change if they could travel in the past, they would probably answer: nothing. For me, having a messed up life right now, if asked the very same question then I would probably answer the very same. Even it really hurts that Eureka hates me and its costs was the truth of her identity then fine, I’ll accept it. I know that sounded ridiculous but sometimes life is a lot ridiculous.
Along the rushing drips of the rain, I’ve heard someone knocked on the door. Being the only one at home, I rushed to open it and was surprised to see Eureka. She was wet and shivering. Her head was free of any bandages and some of her wounds have already become scars.
“Eureka,” I managed to evoke. She looked at me, her eyes appears to be different. I couldn’t tell if it was tears on her cheeks or rain drops but I could tell that she’s sad and scared. “Eureka, why are you out here? Why didn’t you bring an umbrella?” she didn’t responded. I grab her by her arms and brought her inside. She was cold.
“I’m gonna get you a towel.” I said. I was already shifting to the closet when she hugged me firmly and I hugged her back.
“Luke,” she sobbed. And that moment I knew that I need her just as she needs me now.
“I’m so sorry...” I kissed her at her forehead and hugged her again. Then after a while we stopped hugging and quickly grabbed a towel from my closet and gave it to her. I also lent her my biggest shirt so she could change. After drying up, she appeared as if she was a survivor of a disaster.
“Luke,” she seated beside me at my bed. Then she began crying again and I could only caress her shoulders. “it’s Iris, she’s missing.”
“What?”
“It’s the book’s work isn’t it?” she sobbed. She really looked devastated. “I’m so sorry, Eureka.” I muttered.
I’m sorry too for doubting my feelings for you.”
“We’re going to look for Iris, alright?” I kissed her again on her forehead as if my kisses could capture all of her sadness right now.
“I’ve search everywhere Luke, I couldn’t find it.”
“In the book, Darwin returned Iris to your parents so you would go back to your home.”
