Chapter 6

Zoey woke up with a loud yawn, and groans of displeasure when Rythian jostled her out of her slumber. She hadn't slept well at all the night before, as nightmares made her afraid to fall asleep once more. Little did she know Rythian would wake her up at the break of day.

"Come on Zoey, get up. There's things to be done."

"Why? I don't want to get up. It's too early," she groaned. However, she soon obliged, and

rolled out of her covers. She gave an unamused look at Rythian, and he chuckled.

"Not much of a morning person, are we?" he said to her. "Well, you better change that quick. We both have things to do."

Her eyes perked up at his words. "Like magic?" She couldn't wait to see just how much Rythian was capable of, as well as herself.

"Not yet," he replied. "First, we have to do some chores."

So, after getting dressed, the duo started doing their required tasks. Zoey was to clean the dishes, and make her bed. She could easily say that the second task went much quicker than the first. Dishes were piled high atop the sink, and the counters near the sink. "Rythian?" she called. The Mage's head popped out from his magic room.

"Yes, you called?" he replied.

Zoey grinned and called back, "If you do chores like this every day, then why is this sink so messy?" She giggled as Rythian tripped on his words.

"Well, I, er... I guess you could say I've slacked off a bit when it comes to chores." he said sheepishly.

"Then come and help me. This is your mess more than it is mine, I've only eaten here twice."

Rythian came over to her, and grimaced as he saw his mess. "Yeah, maybe I should help you."

They had split the tasks between the both of them. Zoey would wash and rinse them, and hand them to Rythian to dry and put away. Their plan worked well, as he didn't seem to like water, and she wasn't tall enough to reach some of his cabinets. The job was finished about an hour later, and the two of them felt very accomplished with one another.

"Can we do some magic now, Rythian?"

The Mage took a glance around, and everything seemed to be in order. He nodded his head, and gestured for Zoey to follow him. He took her outside, and she sat down in the soft grass. The sun was still high in the sky, and he looked to it.

"Still looks around one or two, I think we could practice until sunset." He looked to her, and lifted an eyebrow. "Want to see what I can do?"

"Of course," Zoey said, hiding her excitement best she could. "Go ahead."

He took a step back, and looked at her, a small smile playing on his lips from under the mask. He was very fond of surprising people with his talents.

"Alright, just remember that I've had lots of practice, and you will be able to do these things, eventually." And with that, he waved his hand and was gone in a puff of smoke. He reappeared behind an awestruck Zoey, and whispered, "Hello." She jumped about a foot in front of him, and let out an exasperated sigh as she realized it was him. He took that as a sign to continue.

Then, he waved his hands out to his sides, and below his arms, were dark, menacing looking wings. The wings soon disappeared as he flicked his wrists, and vines grew up from the ground to meet his hands. Beautiful purple flowers blossomed on the vines, and Zoey took one off, and placed it in her hair, smiling. The Mage kept going with his tricks. Fire erupted from his hands, and wrapped around then, travelling up his arms, not leaving a single scorch mark. He then became a bit shy, and backed off, the fire dying. Zoey looked at him questioningly. What was the matter?

"Rythian, everything alright?"

He nodded, but still looked troubled. "There's one last trick I had wanted to show you, but I don't want you to..." he trailed off.

Zoey tilted her head, "Don't want me to what?" she asked, a bit worryingly.

After a minute of silence, he sighed. "I don't want you to fear me. This is the trick I'd learned when I was a child. It frightened everyone else, giving me a bad name and no friends. Why do you think my last name is Enderborn? It's not my real last name, but more of a nickname."

Zoey smiled comfortingly. "Rythian, after agreeing to teach me magic, and letting me stay with you during this time, I don't think I'll run from a silly little trick."

He shrugged, "Alright, if you say so." He braced himself, and started. Suddenly, the scenery grew dark, almost as if the sun had gone out. Rythian's features grew dark, and his eyes started glowing a ferocious violet. He seemed to grow taller, and thinner. Then, he barked out a laugh, and he disappeared. The darkness quickly dispersed, and Rythian was standing there, looking his normal self. Zoey sat there, and shuddered.

"See? People gave me the surname Enderborn because I seemed to make myself an enderman." Zoey said nothing, but nodded. He walked over to her, and helped her up. "I'm sorry Zoey, I didn't mean-"

"Rythian, I said I wasn't going to run from a trick, and I'm not. That wasn't you, that was the trick. You are not a monster, and I am not afraid. Now, can you teach me tricks like that?" she told him confidently. On the inside though, she was quite shaken up by what she had seen. The Mage seemed to make himself a monster. However, she had to stay strong for his confidence. He didn't want to think she was afraid, so she wasn't going to let him know she was afraid.
