White Eyes

During a night of the moon's absence the sky was speckled with stars but mostly covered by clouds. The night was still and calming to me but with the veil of darkness came a sense of something lurking in the silence. I have always been afraid of the dark.

Tyler and I were driving home from a night in the town when we came upon the familiar sight that we were almost home. The long, straight and old dirt road with corn fields lining both sides. I was watching the corn out of my window when I caught the glimpse of something, but for only a split second. All I can recall seeing was what looked like a light shining through the corn. No, two small very bright lights that paralelled each other about a foot apart. I tried to continue looking at it but the car was moving too quickly and I lost sight of it just about as soon as I saw it. It must have just been my being exhausted. I mean it was midnight and we have been out all day.

We finally made it home, but something seemed a little off about Tyler. He was keeping a very close eye out on the tree line that splits our house from our neighbors. I asked him what was wrong and he kept his eyes fixed on the treeline.

"Nothing, I just swear I saw something in the trees" he laughed it off to try and calm himself.

I told him what I saw in the corn a few moments before. Naturally just telling the story and making the coincidental connection spooked us both. We commenced to hurry inside and lock our doors. An hour or so passed and we kind of forgot about the whole thing.

Tyler was playing his video games with his headphones on while I was reading a book. I heard a slight tapping on the window. A slow, methodical tapping. I ignored it.

tap... tap... tap...

The tapping wouldn't cease. I looked up to see the same balls of light staring at me. They looked almost ethereal with a little luminescent smoke coming out of them like when you first blow a candle out. I stared, petrified at what was staring back. I eased my hand up and tapped Tyler on the arm, he looked over to me to see the fear in my eyes. Tyler quickly fixed his sight to the window, where, to his amazement, the smoky white eyes were staring directly at him, about five inches from his face. He slowly backed to me and we embraced while staring at the white eyes. We sat like this for what felt like hours, with an odd mix of comfort and terror. The eyes slowly vanished in the wind.

We both loosened our grip on each other to realize we were gripping each others arms far too hard. We just looked at each other with terror in our eyes. He hastily jumped over to the window and closed the curtain. We both calmed down a bit after shutting and locking our bedroom door. We both postponed our showers and brushing our teeth to the morning. We were far too frightened to leave the room.

The time was about 4am. I awoke to a crash in the kitchen, I reached over to wake up Tyler to find he wasn't with me.

"He must be in the kitchen getting some water," I told myself.

I stumbled through the hallway towards the kitchen when I heard the water turn on. To this I was relieved. I walked a little less cautiously.

"Baby, what are you doing in here?" I wiped my eyes to clear my tired vision.

I came around the corner to see what looked like a warzone. The cabinets were all flung open and the contents shattered and scattered around the kitchen floor with Tyler standing by the sink with the running water. I paused, with my fear hastily returning.

"T-Tyler? Are you okay?" I stuttered.

The lights in the kitchen began to dim and flicker. The room was utter silence. Tyler turned to look at me. His eyes white and smoky and a smile large and grim. He began slowly walking towards me. Through each flickering of the light, his smile and figure looked slightly more sinister. When he reached the corner of the bar he stood about seven feet tall and lacked all detail minus a silhouette and those white smoky eyes. His hand was knives as his fingers cracked on the marbel bar top.

Something was infiltrating my mind. I felt a comfort I've never felt before. I embraced the silhouette with white eyes and subsequently my body grew numb and I crumpled to the floor, the creature with the white eyes laid over me and stared into my eyes. All I could hear was the ripping and tearing of my flesh and the snapping of my tendons and bones. The knives hands were digging my eyes out of their sockets. But I could feel nothing. My vision grew white as snow.
