Chapter one
" Places, and positions people! Quick, quick, quick!" Screamed our crazy stage manager, Violet. She kept scribbling on her notepad and listening to David, the band's physco manager, on her headset while simultaneously yelling at all of the dancers.
I quickly got into my starting pose, glancing at my best friend and fellow dancer, Maddi and giving her a little excited smile. This would be the first performance on the band's summer concert tour which would travel all across America. No pressure or anything. Maddi smiled back, making me feel only a little less nervous.
I had been a back-up dancer for the popular boy band, Formerly Lucky, for a year now, and its been the best thing that's ever happened to me. Dancing is my passion. It always has been and always will be, and nothing will ever get between my dream of become a famous professional dancer. Nothing. I'm sure of it.
When the lights suddenly switch on, illuminating the thick green curtain separating me from the stage, I know it's time to get serious and snap out of my thoughts.
Caroline Crawford, our head choreographer walks over to us, twisting her fingers around in her hands. Since we're always on the road, it's hard and expensive for families to travel around with back-up dancers, so Caroline is almost like a mother to us. Not to mention she's one of the best choreographers in the country.
" Alright everybody, it's go time. This isn't a regular practice or dress rehearsal even. This is the real deal, this is what you signed up for when you auditioned to become a dancer for Formerly Lucky. There's no going back, only looking ahead. Have no regrets. You all trained very hard for this moment, so go get 'em! It's showtime."
" Yes ma'me," we all repeat, determined. It's true what she's said though. Every word of it. Us dancers have put our hearts, souls and bodies on the line for this, training six days a week, fourteen hours a day. I know every dance routine better then I know myself.
" Good," Caroline said, smiling and walking away to the backstage.
I think about what she had just said again. Showtime. I'd always loved that saying. It meant that it was time to start something great, to go out there and become a star, be the best that you ever could be.
" Alright, we're on in five, four, three.." Violet began to count. Three seconds until I was transformed from a nobody back-up dancer to a real back-up dancer. A real dancer. I take a deep breath and focus.
" Two, one, go!" Violet cried out. I smile as the thick green curtain goes up, revealing bright lights, cameras flashing, hundreds of screaming middle school girls and smoke from the firecrackers that just went off.
Out of the stage, the band slowly rises up, causing the crowd to go wild. Jake, the leader of the band says a few words and then the music starts.
My body moves to the rhythm of the beat twisting and turning, leaping high into the air like a graceful bird. Up and down, round and round. Everything else becomes a blur.
It's showtime.
