Chapter 15

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

I slowly awake to the sound of loud beeping and hushed murmurs. Hospital sounds. I'm sore everywhere, with a throbbing headache and numb legs and head.

But why on earth am I in a hospital? I'm too curious to keep my eyes closed any longer. I slowly drag open my eyelids and bright, harsh light momentarily blinds me. Eventually, they adjust, letting me take in my surroundings. There is a man in white scribbling on a clipboard, talking to.... Gran! Gran and Paige are here! I smile. But why are they here with me in a hospital? I don't remember anything happening to me.

" She's awake," a strange, hopeful voice says to my left, the side my back was turned to. I roll over carefully. I don't want to hurt my injured body any more, although I can't remember for the life of me how I got here, or why I'm hurt.

There is a small group of unfamiliar people clustered around the hospital bed. The blinds are closed, which means it must be nighttime. The people are dressed up in fantastic costumes. They appear to have come straight from some dance performance. Dance. I know I still love to dance, but I still don't know who these new people are. They seem almost familiar, but more of a face-you-saw-on-the-street-familiar than, I-know-these-people-well-familiar.

" Sophia, how are you feeling?" asks a girl about my age in a brightly colored performance leotard. I blurt the first thing that comes to my mind.

" How do you know who I am?" A confused expression crosses her face, and she glances back at the others worriedly.

" Sophie, I'm Maddi, remember? Maddi. I'm one of your best friends." I frown. How could she be my best friend if I don't even know her? Paige is my best friend, not this stranger.

" I don't know what you're talking about." The girl-Maddi- looks almost scared at my statement.

" Sophia, I'm Maddi. And this is Caroline, Violet, Tyler, Taylor, Jenna, Charlie and, uh, Zack. Remember?"

" No." I don't know who anyone is. "Gran, Paige," I call out, turning from the new faces and facing the more familiar ones.

" Baby!" Gran cries, rushing over and kissing as much as my face as her old body and the hospital bed allows.

" Soph!" Paige sobs loudly, lightly pushing Gran aside and taking my hand. " How are you feeling?"

" Bad. I'm really sore and kinda numb. What happened?" I ask.

" We'll let the doctor talk to you," Gran says gently. " We're just glad that you're okay. I've missed you. We both have." I frown again.

" Why have you missed me?" I practically saw them everyday, didn't I? Could they not see me in the hospital until now, or were they just speaking figurativly? Gran and Paige slowly back away, while the strangers stand up and follow them out, leaving me alone with the doctor. He continues to make notes on his clipboard for a while before looking up and speaking to me.

" How are you feeling?"

" I"m sore and tired, numb and confused," I answer bluntly. He nods and writes that down.

" Sophia, I'm going to tell you some things you might not want to hear, okay?" I nod. I just want to figure out what's going on.

" You dance, correct?"

" Yes, I love to dance. Is that how I got hurt? Why can't I remember anything? Who were those people just now?"

" Slow down, slow down," the doctor says chuckling slightly. " By the way, you can call me Dr. Berkley."
