So Far Away

Yoongi looked out across the sea from his window. The sky breaking over the landscape cast spots of sparkling sunlight in sheets over the waves. He sipped his 6am coffee and tried to pretend Hoseok was looking out over the sea back at him wherever he was too.

He wasn't. He was 16 hours ahead and  most likely getting ready to go to sleep. And besides, Incheon looked over a completely different sea to Los Angeles.

Yoongi sighed and stepped away from the window. It was hard being in this strange city and so far away from the love of his life. And he missed the seasons! Los Angeles had been 80 degrees and sunny every day since he got here 2 months ago, or at least it felt like it had been. He wanted just a little bit of an autumn chill in the air. He wasn't made for hot weather, or covering up to protect his sensitive skin. He sighed. He shouldn't complain. He was so lucky to be here, in this incredible, if small, sea-facing apartment, working a dream internship for a major American record label. So lucky. So he had to keep working hard, even if his heart was breaking.

He threw on a t shirt and shorts and went to run along the seafront. For Hoseok, he had to look after himself and enjoy his time here. Another 4 months. Twice the time he'd been here without his love and it had already halfway killed him.

He took a quick shower and headed to work. His co-workers were nice enough despite the language barrier, and his English was improving every day. He loved his work and threw his heart into it, and that didn't go unnoticed by his bosses. He'd even found a great place to eat Korean noodles nearby to the studio. But he still felt empty, like he was going through the motions of life without fully participating.

He got home around 6, deciding to stay home for dinner and make himself some comfort food to remind him of home. He went to unlock the door and noticed it was already unlocked. That was odd. He never forgot to lock his door. He was most fastidious about that. He opened the door quietly, alert and unnerved. He noticed an extra pair of shoes in the doorway when he went to take his off.  What the fuck?

He crept along the short corridor, carrying an umbrella from the doorway stand up in the air. He reached the open doorway to the kitchen/living room. He dropped the umbrella to the ground.

"What the fuck, Hoseok?"

Hoseok jumped up from the couch where he'd been looking out at the sea, deep in thought.

"Shit, Yoongi! How the hell did you get in here so quietly! I was meant to be-"

He was immediately silenced by Yoongi's lips on his own. He let his half formed sentence fall away from his mind as he accepted that warm embrace he'd been missing for so long. His hands knotted into Yoongi's hair, longer than when he'd left, he never remembered to get a haircut unless Hoseok reminded him, bringing Yoongi closer and closer to himself, pressing every part of his body against the small frame. He never wanted to let him leave. But he did have to let him breathe, so he should probably stop squeezing him so hard.

They broke apart, breathless, still holding each other's waists. "I wasn't meant to just be sat on your couch you know, I was meant to have a party popper and pop it over you as you came in the room."

"Thank God you didn't. I thought you were an intruder, I would've punched you in the face." He chuckled. "And this way I got to surprise you a little bit too."

"I can't believe I haven't seen you in so long. I didn't realise how wrong it felt." Hoseok kissed Yoongi's  collarbones, smelling his skin. Breathing in his scent, it felt like ringing in his ears he'd learnt to ignore had finally stopped. He just felt right here, right at home with this person. His home had become a person and it was incredible.

Hoseok made Yoongi tteokbokki despite his jet lag, and they ate on the small balcony of Yoongi's apartment, looking over the sea. The sun was setting slowly and laboriously, sinking under and into the waves. Yoongi got some blankets and they stayed out on the balcony, Hobi snuggling his face into Yoongi's neck as he sat on his lap. As the sun set, Yoongi had to ask the question he was so anxious to know the answer to.

"When do you have to go back home?"

Hoseok looked at him, smiling that perfect, aristocratic smile. "You haven't looked in your room yet, have you?"

Yoongi frowned, confused. "No, why?"

"I'm not going home. I'm staying here, with you."

"What?"

"If you go look in your room you'll see 2 massive suitcases because I'm not staying for a weekend, or a week, or even a month. I'm here until you come home with me."

"But... how?" Yoongi was completely dumbfounded.

"I can't live without you, Yoongi. Not for the next 4 months. I need you around, I need to be silly with you and dance around and have it be 8 in the morning and you're grumpy and scowling into your coffee and I come in and annoy you until you break into a smile and I know I can take on anything today because I made the grumpy old man Señor Yoongles smile his big gummy smile and -"

Yoongi was sat shaking his head. Hoseok's face fell.

"You're mad. I'm sorry. I didn't... I didn't mean to intrude, I'm sure you have your life here, and I know you've always liked having your own space, I just thought -"

Yoongi silenced him with a kiss again. Long, deep and intensely loving.

"How in the hell did I ever get so lucky as to meet a man like you?" He said with a smile. A tear crept across Hoseok's cheek as he smiled back. They watched the stars appearing over the sea in the distance. Together.
