Hide and Seek

Last year, the night before Halloween, my parents hosted a Halloween costume party. All of our friends and family showed up. At this time, I was around the age of eleven and my sister, Macey, was nine. During the party all the kids played around and pretended to be the character they were dressed up as, while the adults talked and ate snacks.

The party lasted until 10:30, most of the people who came, had left. My Aunt and Uncle along with our cousins stayed a while longer so the four of us kids decided to play a game of hide and seek. Our cousin, Mark, is the same age as me. Mark ended up being the one who counted, while Alley, Mark's sister, Macey and I, all ran to our hiding spots.

Ally hid in a closet upstairs while Macey and I hid in the laundry room in the basement. Macey and I hid together because neither of us were brave enough to hide in the basement alone. The both of us crouched down next to the dryer, in the dark and out of sight from the doorway.

We heard Mark yell "Ready or not, here I come!" from upstairs where we left him.

Macey and I stayed totally quiet, not wanting to be the first ones found.

"Brittney, why are you breathing so heavily?" Macey suddenly asked me.

"I'm not." I told her.

That's when I heard it too, a heavy breathing in my right ear, right between Macey and I. In that moment I run to the light switch and flip the light on. It was just the two of us in the room, the two of us screamed and darted up the stairs no longer caring about the game we were playing.

Our parents freaked out when they heard us screaming and when they asked us what was wrong, all we told them was that we got scared of the dark. We didn't think they would believe us if we told them what really happened.

After that we didn't continue playing hide and seek and the four of us just hung out and played in me and Macey's room.

I'm sixteen now, Macey and I are still terrified of the laundry room to this day...
