I recently moved into my apartment. I'm twenty-two years old and I'm very happy to finally be living on my own. The apartment itself is pretty old, the building was built in 1935, so it's obviously showing its age. A few of the apartments have been renovated, including mine, but it still has some wear and tear. Since the building is so old, I don't freak out too much when I hear thuds or tapping sounds every now and again.
One night I was up late, sitting quietly on my couch, scrolling through my Instagram when I heard a knock on my door. I was confused since it was going on 11:00 and it's unusual for anyone to be knocking on my door at this time of night.
I stood up from the couch and walked to the door. I looked through the peephole in the door to see who was out there. However, the hall was empty. Opening the door, I stuck my head out into the hall to see if it might have been some crazy teenagers who thought it would be funny to play a prank on me. Again, no one was in sight.
Confused once again I shut the door, locked it and decided to head to bed. During the night I suffered through some horrific nightmares of terrifying creatures lurking in the darkness of my room. One of the creatures were standing next to my bed, leaning over me. I jolted awake and looked around my room to see that, to my relief, it was empty. I tried to go back to sleep but shortly after I'd get back into a deep sleep those creatures would appear again. These nightmares kept me awake for most of the night. Around three in the morning I was so exhausted that I finally fell asleep and the creatures left me alone. I woke up the next morning at 9:45. Still a bit groggy from the night before, I rolled out of bed and got ready for the day. I was meeting up with my best friend, Stacey, for brunch at around ten-thirty so I had to quickly finish up and head out the door.
Luckily, I made it on time and Stacey was already sitting down at a table.
"Lauren, you need to show me pictures of your apartment!" she demanded excitedly.
I giggled at her excitement and pulled out my phone. "Alright, alright."
I had taken several photos of my apartment when I moved in because I was so proud of myself for finally being able to move out of my parents' house.
While scrolling through my camera roll to find the pictures, I noticed something odd and absolutely chilling. There was a picture that was taken last night, a few minutes after I had fallen asleep at 3am. In the photo it showed me sleeping on my stomach with the blankets draped on top of me. I could literally feel the color draining from my face as I was overcome with goosebumps. The photo was taken at an angle where whoever took the photo had to have been standing next to my bed looking down at me.
"Hey, Lauren, what's wrong?" Stacey must've noticed my state of terror.
I just glanced up at her and handed her my phone so she could see the photo.
"Oh. My. Gosh." Her eyes went wide. "That's super creepy. You never mentioned having a roommate."
"That's because I don't have one, Stace, I live alone." Stacey gave me an equally terrified expression as she handed my phone back.
I remembered the nightmares from last night. I remembered the creatures in the darkness and the creature standing over me.
"I gotta go." I didn't give her any time to protest as I stood and rushed out of the restaurant.
A week later I moved back into my parents' house, not caring if they were just getting used to having the house to themselves. All I knew was I didn't want to be anywhere near that apartment building again.
