The whole day was pretty much a blur of worrying about detention. I still can't believe I managed to be late to my first class. I had two other classes with Rory. At lunch I sat in the library worrying about detention even more. I know. I worry too much. My dad won't care if I don't come home right after school as long as I tell him I'll be out, so I texted him when the librarian wasn't looking during lunch.
This is it. Detention. This should be fun.
Rory and this other guy in my math class were already there. They were the only ones. I think his name was Zeke. “Hi Harper,” Rory says when he sees me. I say hi back. Zeke or whatever his name is says, “Hey new girl, welcome to the detention room. I have a feeling you'll be spending a lot of time here.” Okay, that was rude. I ignore him and go sit down next to Rory. “Actually I was a straight A student at my old school,” I say smugly to Zeke. “Okay Ms. Brainiac. No need to get your panties in a bunch,” he retorts. Again, rude. So I roll my eyes. The detention teacher storms in and shouts, “I don't know what you three hooligans did to get detention on the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL but I'm out until dismissal.” Then she storms back out of the room. I'm surprised at that teacher. Who would leave detention students alone?
“How did Ms. Brainiac end up in detention anyway?” Zeke asked. “I was late to math,” I say trying to sound nonchalant. “Is that so?” he says. I nod and he says, “Mmhhmm,” sounding suspicious. Now he's starting to get on my nerves.
“Stop,” I say, my voice getting louder. Okay, okay, I know there isn't much here to be angry at here but I'm kind of stressed out right now and I get angry at the littlest things when I'm stressed. “Stop what?” he mocks. “Oh so you think this is funny?” I say. “It's actually hilarious and you didn't answer my question.” That's it. I run around the table toward him before Rory can hold me back from attacking Zeke. As I corner him between the table and the wall, Zeke's eyes widen “F-f-f-fire,” he chokes out. “What?” I ask, surprised. Then Rory says, “Y-y-you're o-o-on f-f-f-fire.” “What?” I repeat. I look down at my hand and scream. My whole arm has flames blazing on it. So does my other one. Then I stop screaming. The flames aren't hurting me. Zeke somehow managed to get away. He runs up behind me and sprays me with a fire extinguisher.
I'm practically hyperventilating when I say, “What. Just. Happened. I was on fire.” “I think our little New Girl here has powers just like us,” Zeke says. “You know?” Rory demands. Zeke nods. “What is going on!” I practically shout. Zeke says, “Calm down Dragon or you might just set yourself on fire again.” I glare at him but sit down anyway. Rory takes a deep breath then begins, “Here's the deal: Zeke and I have powers. I can fly and run super fast. Zeke can communicate with animals. We're pretty sure you have powers controlling fire.” “But I don't want to control fire,” I whine. “We don't want our powers either,” Zeke mumbles under his breath. I ignore him and ask, “Where did the powers come from? Why do we have them?” “We don't know,” Rory says quietly. “Oh,” I say.
“Detention dismissed,” the teacher announces. She doesn't even seem to care that I'm covered in white foam from the fire extinguisher. I stalk out, quickly followed by Rory and Zeke.
