There was one week left into the summer vacations and teachers had bombarded us with multiple assignments. We were in the 2 period and I had A.P English.
I got to the class early so I sat in my usual seat and was just compiling my assignment before handing it over to Mr. Hackett, my English teacher. I was so busy fumbling with my assignment that when I looked up that class was filled with students.
Mr. Hackett had just entered the class and greeted us. "Today is the last day to turn in your assignment, students and the students who have not yet submitted them should stay after the class with their lame excuses".
Mr. Hackett was in his early thirties and he had a great sense of humor. He was never hard on us but didn't go easy on us either.
A timid girl entered the class and handed a sheet of paper to Mr. Hackett. He nodded his head knowingly and looked up. "Guys, this is Sally Kingston, she will be with us for the rest of the year. Ms. Kingston, please take a seat." He said.
He turned around to face the board and wrote 'HAMELETT 'and so begun our class. Next 2 periods flew by in the same manner. The news about Sally Kingston flew around the school pretty quickly.
She was from New Jersey and had just moved here, she lived with her mom and an elder sister (who was in college and apparently super hot). She loved playing football and was pretty good as well. Everybody knew this by lunch. Even at our table during lunch everyone was talking about her only and kept coming up with crazy theories. I refused to take part in it even though I was listening.
Suddenly all of them stopped talking at once and stared above me. I followed their graze and saw the topic of their discussion standing there with food tray I her hand. "HI, can I sit with you guys?"she asked in birdlike voice to no one in particular.
I looked around the table at everyone and they all seemed to be deep in thought. "Yeah sure" I replied to her question and I felt everyone's graze turn to me. She smiled shyly but gave me look which said where-should-I-sit-There's-no-seat-here. As I was sitting in the corner seat, I scooted forcefully, moving others against their will and made some space for her. She mumbled a thank you and sat down.
The atmosphere of our table changed as they could not resume their previous conversation/debate on the person sitting right beside me. I made a lame attempt to strike up a conversation with Sally saying, "Hey, How'd you like the food?". "The food's fine, but the soda sucks. Don't they serve Frappe here? They served it at my old school.".
"What's a frappe?"Isabel asked (she's one of the people sitting at the table). "You don't know what a frappe is? Strange" she replied in a surprised tone. "It's an exotic fruit juice; it's made and exported from Australia. No wonder they don't have it here." she continued.
"Get up and Get lost."Marcy said in an angry voice."Excuse me?"Sally said. "Get up and get lost. Don't come near this table ever again."Marcy said in a very calm voice making every word datively clear.Sally wore a confused expression and did not even stir at Marcy's voice. "You come in our school. Sit at our table and then insult our school. Go and show you attitude to someone else. Now go away before we throw you out." Maggie made a threat with the last words.
Sally's face bared a blank expression as she quietly got up with her food and went away.
