Peggy was walking to school when she heard it. The voice.
"Turn back!" It said.
She stopped in her tracks and looked around. "Hello? Who's there?" She asked to the wind. She kept walking. She never heard the voice all through school.
"Hey, Peggy! How was your day? Sorry that I didn't come over at lunch. I was talking to Kevin and lost track of time." Said Nixie, Peggy's best friend, while they were walking home together. Nixie and Peggy were friends since first grade and were now in their first year of high school. They live only three to six houses apart and spend most of their time together.
"It was fine and I don't really care what you do with your spare time and if that is talking to your brother's best friend, oh well." She told her.
"Pegs. Don't say it that way. You know what I meant. We were talking about my brother's surprise party. You know you only turn eighteen once." She replied.
"I know. I get it. But Miles is already nineteen and Steven is seventeen. Won't be long 'till Cara is twelve so..." Miles and Steven were Peggy's two older brothers and Cara was her younger sister.
They were always there for each other until a month right before their parents split up. Eventually Miles started to pick on Steven and one day they got in a big fight. Now, when they go from between their mom's or dad's house, Miles and Steven are never together which meant Cara and Peggy were also separated.
"You okay? I didn't mean to bring up old memories. I'm sorry if I did." Peggy's friend replied.
"No, no, it's not that. I'm fine."
"Peggy, go back!" There it was again the voice!
Peggy looked around. Where was it coming?
"You okay, Pegs? You look like you just saw a ghost."
"Did you just here that?"
"No. What are you talking about?"
"The voice! You're telling me that you didn't hear that voice?!"
"No. Peggy you're scaring me."
"Girls, go home." The voice. This time both of them heard it.
"Ahh! What was that?" Nixie screamed.
"You're telling me you heard that?"
"I don't know what I heard."
"Yes! I knew I wasn't crazy. Wait. I should be crazy? Where is it coming from?"
"I don't know but I'm going to listen to it. I'm going home? And you?" Nixie told her friend.
"Yeah. I'm at dad's today. Maybe you can stay over and we can talk about this more."
Peggy really hoped Nixie would come over. She had to stay with Miles. He had taken the slit worse than everyone else. And anytime someone brought up his parents being apart, he would retaliate. And I mean he would punch them in the nose or nock them over or something else that I don't want to mention at the moment. The point I'm getting to is, that he did not take it well. He never hurt Peggy though. Sure she used to annoy him but no matter what she said he never hurt her. It was different for Cara though. Even though he didn't physically hurt her, he did emotionally. Peggy was the one person he didn't utterly despise.
"Um, I can ask my dad but I'm not sure today is a good day. He's been having trouble at work recently and you know. It's Wednesdays and Wednesday's are the worst." Nixie explained.
Nixie really wanted to stay with her friend but she didn't want to leave her brother, Tyler, at home with her dad. He gets very abusive when he's angry, especially with Tyler. Nixie has learned how to avoid his wrath but Tyler could never escape it. Even if he did everything his father said, his dad always found a reason to hit him.
"I get it. Go home. We can always talk tomorrow." Peggy understood her friend's situation. It was similar to her brothers'.
The two girls have been together through thick and thin and now this. Now they will need each other more than ever. They both walked home together silently. When Peggy got to her house, she turned and hugged her friend.
"Bye. Be careful, 'K'?" Peggy told her.
"Will do." Nixie said as the wind blew through her caramel-colored hair, making it look almost reddish. The weird thing was that it wasn't blowing on Peggy, but it was from her. Her direction. But no sign that it was blowing on her. Nixie just ignored it. It wasn't as weird as hearing a voice in her head. Peggy turned around and said bye one last time as she turned to head inside her house. Nixie waved goodbye.
Nixie turned to walk to her house, the wind picked up making a sudden cool chill blow through the air. Trees were were swaying side to side. Made an almost whisper sound as the leaves rustled. She started to walk. Very cautious now that she was alone. She often walked home by herself after Peggy got home but this was different. Something about that voice. It creeped her out. She walked home slowly. The girl was only about a block away. She felt insecure. Like someone was watching.
"Stop freaking yourself out, Nixie!" She told herself. She walked home. As she got to the door she heard a smash of glass. Probably one of her dad's beer bottles again hitting her brother. She opened the door. Her dad just dropped the bottle on the floor. She let out a breath she never knew she was holding.
As Nixie walked to her room she heard her father yell, "Tyler, get in here and clean this up!" She saw her brother slowly open the door with his head down until he noticed his sister there and pulled it up quickly as if showing her that he wasn't afraid but she knew otherwise.
I'm sorry. She mouthed to her brother.
He ignored her. Tyler was really good at hiding his feelings but Nixie was the only one who could see past it.
Trust each other and you will be free. All six of you. The voice called to her.
All six? What did it mean by all six? She would soon find out.
