 Chapter 3 Coffee Date

(Lauren Jauregui POV)

I cannot believe I had to call Karla and tell her that I would be late. She must think I am a tardy person. The way I acted on the phone. The way she reacted. I do not want to go on a date with her and have her put up with a girl like me. She could find someone way better than me. When she talked to me on the phone, she seemed sad and scared. I hope she does not feel that way when we go on our date.

I walked into the coffee shop and saw her sitting at a table in the back of the room in a quiet corner. I came over there, and she got scared.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."

"it's OK. I should have seen it coming," she said. "sit down."

I sat down in front of Karla.

"So, Karla, have you ordered anything yet?".

She looked up from her phone and shook her head.

"Nope. I was waiting for you." She said. She put her phone down. She looked nervous. Gosh, I hope I did not freak her out and make her think that I have a drinking problem or something because of that phone call earlier. I decided to be straightforward with her before I waste my time sitting here. But I do not want to scare her off either.

"So, Karla. Listen."

I did not know how to start this conversation without sounding rude.

"About earlier. When did I call you? I hope I didn't scare you about anything."

"No, you didn't scare me. Everything was fine perfectly normal after. It was awkward, but I got over it."

"OK, great. How are you". I asked. The waitress came over. She had on a red apron over her waist tied at the back. Dressed in normal casual clothes. Had brunette hair tied in a neat bun.

"May I take your order?"

I looked at Karla, and she ordered a large cappuccino with two cream and three sugars. I ordered a small French Vanilla coffee with two sugars and one cream. Karla was quiet since we started this date. The reason for this date was for us to talk and get to know each other before we even start dating, like for real.

"Karla, are you OK?". I asked. She has been faced down and quiet. She looked sad about something. About something that probably happened earlier. I can see it in her eyes. She looked like she wanted to cry, but she is holding it all in.

"Nothing to worry about. I'm fine." Karla said as she looked up.

"You seem sad about something. You are pretty quiet, and you're facing down."

"I'm sorry this is a date. I shouldn't be rude. I was just thinking about something. I'm not sad, I swear". Karla said.

Should I believe her?

"OK. How about we go out tonight".

"Tonight? I-I am not sure? But where?". She asked.

"How about a club. You look like you could use a night off for fun."

Karla shrugged her shoulders and was a little confused.

"I can't. I have work tonight. I do night shifts," Karla said.

"Oh, OK, we can go together another time?".

Karla nodded her head. "Yes, I'd like to go." She said.

As time went by, we had some coffee and a few refreshments. We had a great conversation. Getting to know her. She works at night, but she did not tell me what her job is. Sometimes I could get to know her a lot more. She could be hiding a lot of things that I do not know about. Maybe I should follow her? What am I saying? This whole relationship is built on trust? She will never trust me if I do that. But I want to get to know the real Karla.
