Chapter 3

I toss the paper with a bright red 'F' on the top in the garbage with a distant look fulfilling my face. The old me would have had a heart attack at the sight of that grade, but now that things have changed, I just don't care. Everything around me is nothing now that Derek decided to end things. Until we work things out I'm going to need a new perspective on things because nothing is as important as Derek is to me.

My sore feet throb in pain from the heels I'm wearing and I wobble slightly as I exit the classroom with the rest of the crowd. The scent of sweat, cologne and lots of perfume damages my sense of smell as I pass people of all sorts who are obviously overdosing on the delicate toxins.

I open my locker and grab my bag, shoving in books that are now useless to me and not caring if any of them are ruined or harmed. As always the only thought on my mind is Derek; Derek's face and Derek's lips gently grazing mine. The longing to have them back on mine is physically hurting me and making my stomach clench as if I'm going to be sick.

"Amber!" Lucy exclaims as she rushes up to my side, smiling widely like she has some sort of news. Honestly, I don't want to hear anymore gossip or rumors come from her mouth because it will most likely have to do with Derek or Zoey. My head can't deal with anymore pain today and it's still spinning from what she told me during lunch. "Guess what?"

Forcing the fake smile that I seem to be too used to, I pretend to be just as excited as her even though we both know it's useless trying. "What?"

"I overheard Derek and Zoey fighting in the hall after lunch!" she screeches enthusiastically and my eyes widen as a delicate blush creeps up my face. Does she want the whole hallway to hear the news I'm actually looking forward to? This is personal information and I don't need any rumors starting about how desperate I am to get Derek back. I'm not desperate, that isn't the correct word at all, I'm just impatient and want him back as soon as possible.

"What were they fighting about?" I question curiously, trying my absolute hardest not to show how eager I am to hear this news. This has to be my fantasy coming alive; it's about time Derek sees that she's not good enough for him. Hope bubbles up inside of me, ready to explode at the thought of them breaking up and Derek crawling back to me. I would take him in with welcoming arms, all thoughts of Zoey coming between us vanishing.

I smile at the thought and snap out of my desirable vision as Lucy begins blathering about the information that could make or break the rest of my life.

"So yeah, they got in a fight about how she thinks that he's seeing you behind her back. You should have seen how angry she was, I thought she was going to hit him," Lucy explains, her eyes widening like she can't believe what she saw. She shakes her head at the drama, always finding it childish despite her love for it and immediately moves onto something else like she always does.

"Anyways, she even mentioned that Derek has a history with her. Did you know that?" Lucy asks hesitantly, staring at me in concern as my face drops to a deep, depressing expression.

Actually, I didn't know that. And I wish I still didn't. Derek always told me I was his first girlfriend and first time. Why would he lie about something like that? I was always one hundred percent honest with him and I thought he was the same way with me.

I shake my head and silently urge her to go on. "Oh, well, I'm sorry. She was ranting about how they used to be so happy until he saw you and then they broke up. Apparently, from what I heard, they were going out for a few months, he started liking you, asked you out, and then went back to her because they got drunk at a party one night and hooked up. After that hook up, he started liking her-" my trembling voice cut off hers from continuing on with the words I wasn't ready to hear.
