No one in the bakery was more mysterious than Elena. sure, everyone has their secrets but people seem to be more curious of her's. It could be because of the fact that no one knew her real surname or it could also be because she had no tongue or maybe it was because anything that sounded like a gunshot frightened her as well as loud noise or voices and that small spaces make her uncomfortable.
No matter what it was, she had no intention of telling anyone of what she went through because of two reasons. First of all, she had no way of communicating with them, 'them' meaning the people in the bakery as they were the only ones she trusted, more or less. She understood English but didn't know how to write it nor was she good at signing in it. She only learned it in her language and Annie knew her language, they both learned to sign together. Many times she wondered how Marie-Anne was able to understand her when she found her, on the ground, covered in dirt, wounds and had almost died from blood loss. She didn't even stop and tried to consider the consequences of helping a person found at the side of the road. She just rushed her to the hospital and when the doctors couldn't find a trace of her family or relatives in their records, Marie-Annie immediately said that she was her daughter. She thought she died because of a premature birth and was so grief struck she couldn't bear to even look at the fetus and so she just left but a couple of months later, the same doctor that helped her in her delivery came to her house and told her that the child did not die as she presumed. A nurse, as she was cleaning the mess noticed the fetus begin to move and immediately alerted the doctor. They managed to stabilize the condition of the child but it took so long that by the time they were able to do so she had already left and after a few days when they were able to track her address they found that she moved and could not find her new address.
Lost and confused as to what to do, they decide to put the child up for adoption and they found that she was adopted almost immediately buy some family but to their horror, before the proper papers and documents could be finished she disappeared and so did the family that wanted to adopt her. The police were involved and they searched for months but always came to a dead end. After ten years passed, she was declared dead and the case was dropped. The town was a small one at that time and so not many things were developed, even the police and their equipment.
But she believed that her daughter was out there and was relentlessly searching for her for weeks when she stumbled across Elena and immediately sensed a connection and knew she was her daughter. Annie was in tears at this point and none of the staff argued or said anything to her, everyone knew her as the kind lady that helped everyone, she had a really good reputation so no one doubted her. Many of them even comforted and congratulated her in finding her daughter again, complimenting on how pretty she was. The doctors promised to do their best and their best they did. It was only because of how hard the doctors worked that week that she even survived, if anyone else had admitted her she doubt she would have even gotten such a special treatment. She healed with no scars to show that she even got hurt except her tongue, that could not be fixed but she didn't mind.
Elena sat on one of the chairs in the cafe and looked out the window, it was starting to rain outside and she had a very uneasy feeling as she looked towards the city. The cafe was positioned at the most convenient part of the city. It was in the city but not completely surrounded by buildings. there were trees and greenery as well as a city view depending on where you sat and on what you wanted to see. It was the quiet and peaceful part of the city and Annie inherited it from her great aunt, that was why she came back to this city in the first place.
