When Memories Meet Reality

Click, click, click...

The parts of the mechanism I had been working on for almost an hour finally shifted into place. Although it was something I desperately wanted to achieve, in my heart I felt it just wasn't right, as if I were violating the course of nature. Maybe I should leave this be, maybe I should accept that he's gone but I just can't. He had barely begun to live his life, he spent most of it protecting us and we couldn't return the favor just once.

I really shouldn't blame myself.

Lightning crackled above and scared me out of my trance. And in that moment, I could've sworn that I heard someone scream. A boy, clearly yelling into the night, probably another victim of the robots outside. He must've sought the museum as his only refuge. Many had before and simply couldn't make it.

Those things that waited outside were programmed to wipe us out, but look who's here, still standing.

But for how much longer?

I shook my head. No, just stay calm. Being hysterical in this situation was not a good idea.

Suddenly a clamor arose. I heard it grow closer, slick steps up the winding staircase. And in that moment the door flung itself open, I couldn't let anyone know I was here. Stashing my tools and hanging Astro back in his place I ran for the opposite end of the room. Beneath a tarp covered painting I hid, following the intruders every move with my eyes.

It was... a boy, no more than ten. Maybe even less. His breathing was ragged. So, he was the one running from those dehumanized robots! Better yet he still hadn't noticed my presence. The bewildered boy gazed across the room; I followed his line of sight straight to... Astro.

He was curious and gazed through the glass rather closely. His eyes then turned downward, examining the plaque. He began to read aloud.

"The world's first robot with a heart, Became a bridge between humans and robots. He saved many people. After serving his purpose, Here rests Astro Boy."

I don't believe someone who wanted to steal from here would take the time to reminisce on an old robot hero. From behind the painting, I stepped out, quietly walking back into the light.

"He's quite inspiring, isn't he?" I asked, a tone full of warmth and feeling.

I scared the boy half to death, if it weren't for the wall near him, he would've tumbled over.

"I-I didn't mean to trespass! I only... Uh! I can explain!" He jumped back, panicking. I wonder what he was even here for...

"Whoa, whoa. It's alright. Now, can you start with your name?" I asked calmly.

"Uh, Sam. Sam Prendenam."
