And Now We Wait

"Come on...Come on!"

Pop! Sizz...p

"Damn it!"

Dejected, I began to stow away my tools in their case.

"How's the street, Sam?"

The young boy's head lifted at the mention of his name. He then ran over to the small round window above an old administrator's desk. Sam crawled onto the desk and peeked over the window ledge.

"They're still there." He sighed.

"Oh well. That's alright, we can always stay here. It's not like I haven't before."

Walking over to a closet in the far corner of the room I pulled out two blankets, tossing one to Sam.

"Make yourself comfy, we're sure not going anywhere."

Almost immediately Sam had drifted off, buried in the soft blanket. I couldn't help but smile at the sight, he was such a small child, with so much determination.

He reminded me of myself, more years ago now than I realize. Back when I first met Astro I was just like Sam, determined, afraid, excited. Most of the time I could hardly believe some of the things I did, how uncharacteristic of me, yet brave. But no matter what came my way I knew we'd make it through, and so will he.

I woke the next morning with a sore neck and a pounding headache. I had pulled an all-nighter for the third time this week and passed out jotting down notes on my progress. Drool had dripped onto the paper and my pen had long since fallen from the desk. Sam, although was still sound asleep. I opted to let him, just a little longer because of the (presumably) long journey ahead.

During this time, I debated bringing Astro, and although it broke my heart, I knew I couldn't. There was just no way to safely transport him. I knew Sam said Dr. O'shay wanted the both of us, but if it was a trap, I wouldn't want anyone getting their grubby hands on him. Yes, he was definitely safer in an area where I could estimate the danger. When I met Dr. O'shay, or at least that's who he claimed to be, we would find a way to help him. But before that, I needed to ask someone to take over my post at the museum, and I knew exactly who to ask.

I packed a small bag with the blankets, (one of which I pried from Sam), and my tools. Sure, Astro would remain here, but you never know, right? When I was finished, I gently prodded the boy awake.

"Hey? Little buddy, time to get up."

His brown, innocent eyes threw me off as he woke. I shook my head, quickly banishing the memory from my mind.

"Welcome to the world, Astro."
