A Little Help Never Hurt

"Well, Sam. Would you mind telling me what you're doing here?" I asked, although I don't fully condemn him for being here, a healthy dose of skepticism keeps one alive however, and I needed to know intentions.

Sam fearfully nodded, stood and brushed himself off.

"I was sent by Dr.O'shay to find someone."

This was a surprise, and a name unheard of for quite some time. If he was still alive, which I doubted, he was incredibly old by now. Curiosity had taken hold of me.

"Who were you sent to find?"

Sam pointed to the glass case then back at you, pulling an old photo from his jacket and handing it over.

"You. Both of you."

The picture was of Astro and I during the world's fair. It was crinkled and browned with age.

I was very confused, not only should Dr. O'shay be dead, but what if this kid is involved with scavengers? What if he came for Astro? It wouldn't be the first time. Many had come to the museum with the knowledge that one of earth's greatest hero's rested there. Not only was Astro famous, but incredibly valuable, and people do awful things in the need to survive. In addition to making perpetual repairs to Astro I had been his self-proclaimed protector for the past few years and had learned a thing or two.

"Boy, how can I trust you?"

Tears were glistening in his brown eyes, the boy dug into his grubby pants pocket, bringing out a second photo. In a sweep of emotion, it was pushed into my hands.

"I found this in the doctor's office." The strawberry blonde choked. This second photo was taken much later, on my thirteenth birthday. The photo showed O'shay, Zoran, Astro and I seated at a dining room table, I'd just blown out the candles on a chocolate cake that sat in the center.

"I need you to help, because you're the only one I believe can stop those machines outside! I've been searching for you for a long time, and if you don't help me, I don't know what will happen to my people."

The tears that had glistened now dribbled down his cheek. Trying to save face, Sam sniffed loudly. The fact that this boy traveled who knows how far to find us tugged at me. I guess we'll have to find this man who calls himself Dr. O'shay.

I bent down to Sam's level and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I'll-I mean we will help you. I can promise you that."

What I can't promise is Astro's return...

"Great! Come on, I'll take you to O'shay right now!"

"Whoa! Wait! We can't go out there! The bots will terminate us on sight. Until they leave, we'll wait here, they usually move along in a few hours, they have to get back to their docking stations to stay functional."

In the meantime, I've got an old friend to try to revive... again.

"Try to keep quiet while I work for a while, we don't want those things finding us, do we?"

Sam seated himself on the floor against the wall, he held his face in his hands as he watched me work.

"It said he saved people. What kind of people? When was he active? What was he like?" Sam asked.

And just like that, my muddled brain fell back into memories I'd rather forget.

"I sympathize with what you've been through. Your entire existence you've been told what you can be and what to do, never having a single thought or a moment's peace for yourselves! It's time that we as humans allow you the same treatment we give to others, its time you were free to make your own choices. We will show everyone the unique individuals you are and should be respected for!" I shouted to the crowds gathered all over the world, my fist raised to the sky.

The crowd roared in approval, and I felt that it was all mine. Until a man's voice blasted over a microphone. Katari.

"How can you listen to her?!  They sympathize with the plight of robots, and yet when we suffer their uprisings, they turn the blind eye! How can we trust the human who claims to be in love with a machine!? Queen of Robots she might be, but at the price of her humanity! She's turned her back on all of us!"

Enraged shouts erupted from the crowd. The cries of the closed-minded humans covering the support of others. Why? Why don't they understand? If this continues none of us can be free. The catalyst of the end will be our unrest with each other. My head pulsed in a blinding hot anger.

"How can you say that I've turned my back on you when for years I'd done everything I could to keep people safe! Again and again, I gave my prophecies to people who needed them, but blamed me for their future as if I'd written it! Even now, I want humans and robots to be equal so that we might all be friends and grow together. Is this the legacy you want to leave behind, Katari? One of hate and violence?"

Again, those who my message reached clamored to make their voices loud. Cheering for me and calling the title they had given me, welcoming me like other humans never had. The crowd blending into one strong voice.

"Queen of Robots." They chanted.

"You're the only one who knows to the full extent. You're the only one who understands, and I intend to keep it that way."

"...And as much as I need you, I'm the reason you're hurting. I'll always care for you, but you don't need to be involved in this fight. When it's over I'll come back for you, but if I don't I think it's better that way."

I grabbed his hand.

"Are you crazy? You think just because you're leaving, I'll be less attached to you? Just wait, there'll be people cheering in the streets when you're back, you will come back."

He smiled.

"For you. I'll do my best."
