Nothing lasts forever; that's something they realized at too young of an age in a way that neither of them deserved. It started as a day like any other. Young Laxus was running home from a fun day at the guild, his best friends in tow. Y/N and Jason were orphans here at Magnolia, Jason's parents having died in a horrible accident and Y/N's leaving her on the side of the train tracks when she was an infant. They both had found their way to Fairy Tail where Laxus had first met them and—since then—had been inseparable.
Laxus grinned, casting a quick glance back at the slow pokes. Jason was a foot behind him, Y/N even farther. Jason's freckled face sported a goofy smile as he met Laxus's eyes. Out of the two orphans, Jason was the one he got along with best. The dark haired boy always came up with the funnest games, however a few of them ended up getting them in trouble with Master Makarov.
Y/N though...she seemed nice enough, she wasn't much of a talker at first. She probably wouldn't have even left the orphanage if it weren't for Jason. She kind of just followed him wherever he went. According to Jason, he was her only friend at the orphanage due to her overly shy nature.
Laxus's home was located west, just outside of town. It was a smaller house made of brick and wood, a stone path leading up to the front door. Flowers followed the path up and then trailed around the house. Plants hung from the house, the windows wide open. Likely allowing the spring air to enter.
His mother's favorite smell.
And his favorite smell was coming out of the house.
Laxus burst into the home, the wooden door slamming against the wall. His mother jumped from her spot in the kitchen, her wide teal eyes meeting his. Nara Dreyar was a smaller woman, her complexion fair with a bit of flour on her face. Her wavy blonde hair was twisted into a messy bun, a red ribbon keeping it together. Her pale pink dress flowed to her ankles, her sleeves drifting off her shoulders and a white apron covering the front.
Laxus slammed into his mother's leg, holding it tightly as he looked up at her. His eyes gleamed, "I'm home!"
"So I see," Nara gave her son a small kind smile. "Welcome home, Laxus."
Jason ran for the oven, trying to peek inside before Nara stopped him with a warning that it was hot. "Are those cookies?"
"They are and they're almost done," Nara said.
The boys cheered while Y/N only grinned in excitement.
"What's that ruckus?" An elderly voice came from the living room.
Laxus peeked into the room to find his Grami lounging on the couch with a book in hand and the smallest pair of glasses resting on the tip of her nose. Her floral dress hung loosely on the elder's frail body.
"It's me, Grami." Laxus said, plopping down next to the woman and embracing her.
Grami turned her sharp gaze to him. "Oh, bunny. I wasn't expecting you to be back until closer to sunset."
Laxus heard Jason snicker. The young blond whirled to his friend, a glare on his face and knowing full well why the boy was laughing.
"It's not funny!"
Jason smirked, "Okay, bunny."
If Nara hadn't stepped in at the very moment, suggesting they play outside while the cookies finished, Laxus would've...oh what the heck? He still could.
"Good idea, mama!" Laxus grinned at Jason, recalling the name Miss Amber, the orphanage lady, called him. "Let's go outside, puddin."
Jason's face heated, "It's only funny when I do it, Laxus!"
Laxus only rushed outside, Jason and Y/N in hot pursuit. They were only outside for ten minutes, playing dragons and maidens when Laxus grabbed Y/N's hand and put his back to the house—the window above them—and heard his grandmother speak.
"By the way, daughter, how's the custody battle going?"
Laxus's brows to furrow in confusion. Custody battle?
Jason came up next to him roaring—ready to tear Y/N away from him, but Laxus shushed him quickly. With a scowl, Jason did. Laxus peeked into the house, his eyes going to the adults on the couch.
His mother's smile was nowhere to be seen. She played with the flower that bloomed in her hands, her eyes not meeting Grami's. "Mister Laziro says its looking well for me," she said. "He thinks I'll have full custody of Laxus by the end of the month."
The silence roared in his head as he processed his mother's words. He could feel Y/N and Jason staring at him.
Grami eyed the blonde, "You don't seem too happy about it."
"I just..." Nara shook her head, "I love Ivan, mother. And Laxus deserves to have his father in his life."
Grami took the flower from his mother's hand, setting it aside. Scooting closer, she placed a hand on her daughter's and squeezed. "I know, but with what Ivan has been doing and saying, do you honestly think Laxus is safe with him? Ivan has a dark heart, Nara, and his darkness will bleed into Laxus's. Do you want your boy to follow his father's questionable footsteps?"
"Of course not."
"Then hold your chin up, child." Grami lifted her head, "You're doing the right thing. A mother must do what is best for her child, no matter what that may entail."
Laxus had heard enough. He shoved away from the house, a large scowl on his face. He loved his father and saw nothing wrong with him. So why? Why was mother taking Laxus away from him?
And that was when that day started going downhill. Maybe if Laxus hadn't stormed back into the house and screamed at his mother, what came next could've been avoided. Maybe if Laxus never yelled at his mother that he hated her, he wouldn't have to carry the regret he did. Maybe if he didn't run off alone after, he could've stopped what was about to happen.
But he did. He ran off and cried in the forest near his house, unable to understand why his family was falling apart.
And that's when it happened. A large BOOOM shattered through the atmosphere. Laxus's head shot up, his eyes immediately going in the direction where it came from. The same direction as his home. He'd never ran so fast in his life, racing through the trees. He wasn't ready for the sight he would stumble upon. His home was in ruins, bits of flame covering the debris. He cried out for his mother, for Grami and Jason. He started for the rubble, but then something sprouted from among it. Covered in blood and soot with her hair a mess and looking like something out of a nightmare, Y/N stood amongst the chaos. Her eyes blank and blinking. Once. Twice.
Laxus ran, screaming and he didn't stop until he reached the guildhall. After realizing what had happened, Fairy Tail wizards went to the remains of Laxus's house. They found the mutilated bodies of Grami, Nara Dreyar, and Jason.
But they never found Y/N.
And Laxus...Laxus went on to live with the only parent he had left and the one his mother tried to protect him from: his father.
I felt like I rushed a bit on the prologue, so I'm sorry if it's not the best. But hey—at least I updated, right?
