There it is sitting on a shelf I can clearly see it through the window.

I cross the street at a normal pace not taking my eyes off the book.

Once I get there I just stare at it from outside the library.

This book that kept me company for so many years is sitting only only inches away from me.

I only see blurred movement behind the book because my eyes have focused on it then I realize it's coming right toward me.

I release my gaze off the book and I see a little girl only inches away from the glass her eyes super glued to me.

The first thing I notice about her is her glassy water blue eyes then the purplish rings underneath them and her short thin wispy mahogany hair.

"Have you read it?" The glass muffles her raspy voice.

I just nod and she gestures for me to join her in the library. She opens the door for me it's obviously heavy on her frail bones. But I don't say anything or give her a teethy smile and say " Thank you so much" like people used to do to me. I just walk in and she's obviously excited to speak to me because she blurts out .

" Hi, I'm Alissa James But you can call me liss or lissa."

Then the words just flow out of my mouth.

"I'm Hazel, Hazel Grace Lancaster"

"So before you came over here I looked at the last page of the book An Imperial Affliction and I just think it's outrageously beautiful how it ends because life ends in the middle of a sentence"

I just nod pretending to understand her even though she doesn't seem the slightest bit upset about how she doesn't know what happens to the other characters. But why would she? only read the last page she wasn't emotionally attached to these characters like me. Why would she only read the last page?

"I think we are very lucky to live life. It's a good life if you get to live it and all of us are until we die. Were you sick earlier in your life? did you have cancer like me?"

I'm suddenly taken back by this how would she know I had cancer.

"Uhm"

"Don't worry aha I haven't been stalking you. I can just tell by the way you treat me."

"Yeah I did I had thyroid cancer and mets in my lungs"

" I have acute leukemia I've had it since I was 11 and I'm 14 now and they doubt it's ever going away soon." She looks down at her phone as the screen flashes with a text and then swings a brown corduroy bag over her shoulder filled with books.

"My moms picking me up now. See you here tomorrow? Same time ?"

"Yeah sounds good"

Before she opens the door she looks back at me and says "Namaste, Hazel Grace, It's a good life." with a slight smirk. A small smile spreads across my lips not a big cheesy with teeth one but one that makes my eyes barely squint up.
