A line of static came from my hidden ear peice under my hoodie. “Talon, you still keeping a lookout on the roof?” “Yeah. And stop faking static. These are designed to combat that. Quit playing with your girlfriend. It’s go time, and also, no one wants to hear that.”
A chuckle came out of my fancy new radio. “No promises.” I rolled my eyes and then zeroed in on my target. She was pretty, probably 17, Curly brown hair, small waist, rocking a mini skirt and crop with t-shirt sleeves. Long legs, light tan, black heel boots. And … perfect manicure was chipped? Interesting. Maybe not a mall girl after all. Didn’t they all freak out over stuff like that? I watched her yell “I'm going home” at a very tangled up couple and wondered where her boyfriend was. Because she probably had one.
Perhaps most intriguing was the red light emanating from her. Huh. Chick was in serious pain. Wonder what happened to her.
I followed on the strip mall roofs till she got to an alley close by the parking lot. I clicked off the radio to tell Dice I was on the target. Then I dropped down beside her making her gasp and side step too quick for her to realize she was in the alley. Huh. Well that was easy. Wow. Now I had to look at the chick's face and... wait why were her eyes so sad? Her face was starting to get paler and I noticed the red haze that represented pain had grown. She was in more pain. Why? I hadn't hurt her. Out of habit, I did a quick body scan. She was fine. “Your pain skyrocketed when I got you into the alley. Why?” And it was getting worse. She was starting to sweat but somehow she kept her voice calm. “That's none of your concern. And I'm fine.” Lie. It was getting worse. “Huh. Really. So you're okay.” She’d started shifting her weight from side to side as if she couldn't help it. “If that's all you're worried about, leave me alone.” “No way.” that I'm gonna be able to rob you now. She closed her eyes for a moment. Her breathing shallowed. And then she started to fall forward. Surprised, I caught her. What the f***? Clearly I needed to get her to the hospital. Why had she gone to the mall? Shaking my head at the situation that had just dropped into my hands, I carried her to my car wondering where the nearest hospital was. Huh. She's light.
