Leaving

It was the next day, a cold blustery grey and drizzly day as we walked past the new set of rubble bricks, glass and wood scattered through the streets and roads. It was always the same. Every morning after the nights air raid there would be another few houses gone over town with many more damaged such as having no windows left. It always made me sad to see families and their houses killed, the endles stretches of white material covering human shaped corpses. I would always hold back the tears and squeeze the hand that was in mine.

Today was no different and yet it felt different we were all walking the same streets but this time peter Susan Edmund and mum were carrying 5 big suitcases between them. Me and lu only had to carry our small bags, gas marks and teddies. Lucy's was a golden bear whilst mine was a grey and faded rabbit with a now faded blue and white arm sized blanket attached. Me and lu were both holding hands trying to stay strong whilst battling against the strong wind that did all it could to blow us back to the bombs and fires of hell that covered most of our district.  The others stoped and waited for us to reach them. Susan then took my hand squeezing it and helping me along while peter did the same to lucy.

Presently we reached the station. I almost lost my family in the endless crowds. We followed mum to the first platform where a massive green engine stood attached to 8 carriages puffing away. Mum then turned to me and lu and attached a Piece of string containing  a label to our coasts.

"Are you warm enough twin dears." Mum asked  We both nodded our head simituniously, we couldn't speak. We were too upset, scared and worried to do so. Mum then moved bringing us both in for a cuddle before she said,"twins look after each other and listen to peter and Susan."

She then turned to Ed and tried to hug him, he pulled away. He then replied, "If dad was here he wouldn't make us go."

"If dad was here it would mean that the war was over and we wouldn't have to go." My oldest brother said back.

I turned my head down to see the floor whilst hiding the tears that I could not hold back any-longer.

I could tell mum was annoyed but she said," You will listen to your brother, won't you Edmund?" Edmund shrugged his answer to her.

Mum then hugged peter and said something to him which I didn't  hear. She then turned to Susan and whispered to her," look after the twins and ed. Stay strong and be a big girl Susan," mum finished. Susan nodded whist hugging mum.

"All right you can go now," was mums last words to us. We were then ushered through the crowds pushing past others. I stoped, where was mum. My head kept darting around searching desperately for her. Why was she not coming with us. She promised we would all be safe.  Lucy noticed and stopped beside me.

"What's up lil?" She asked me

"Where mum?"

At this she also started looking around desperately trying to find our mother. We turned to each other shaking from fear and woriness. We both burst into tears hugging each other wanting our mother we were only 8 at the time.

Su and Pete saw us and tried to comfort us. Pete gave the suitcases to Susan and picked us both up. We snuggled into him and he put a comforting arm around both of us. He carried us on to the train where we found an empty compartment for us. I sat by the window opposite Edmund and next to lucy. Susan sat next to her and Edmund was squashed  right up against the window in attempt to get as far away from our other brother as he could. Peter sat opposite Susan.

The train whistled and jolted into start and we were off watching the people on the train station get further and further away. When we could no longer see them we settled into looking out the window watching the scenery. We were now outside London out Side the city, it had turned from grey to green with sloping fields and blue sky. It was so different so colourful so bright. After a while I became bored. The gentle changing of the stream train lulled me into being sleepy. I fell asleep with my head resting against the glass pain of the window.
