The static sounds of the Television led him into the main room where Xitlali sat on the couch.
He padded barefoot through the wood floor halls and rubbed his eyes as he got used to the brightness of the Television screen. “What’re you doing up?” He mumbled to her, not really sure if that was the right question to ask her. Does she always do this?
“Not tired,” She admitted, glancing at him from the laptop. She managed a small smile and gestured for him to sit next to her. He walked over and sat comfortably on the soft couch. He groaned in pleasure at how nice it felt. She laughed. “I remember you just begging to sleep on this couch instead of the bed.”
He gave a smile just to please her, but he knew he couldn’t fake it.
“What’s wrong?” She asked him, facing him and slightly closing the laptop’s screen.
“Nothing, it’s just so unreal, ya know?” he pulled his legs up to his chest. “IT’s like going to another town where everyone knows you and mentions all of these courageous acts you committed. But yet, you remember nothing.”
“You didn’t do anything courageous, Luke.” She laughed softly, running a hand through his hair. Her touch felt so relaxed, as if she’d done it so many times, but this gesture did not feel normal to Luke.
“I moved in with you! I am attending UNI as soon as I got out of college!”
“That’s normal-,”
“No, it’s not. I probably only went to university because of you! I’m moving so fast-well, the old."
Xitlali giggled. “That’s what she said.” She commented. Luke gave a slight chuckle at her immaturity.
“I swear, sometimes I scare myself.”
His supposedly girlfriend reached over to the coffee table and picked up the large bowl filled to the brink with popcorn. “Eat this,” she ordered, her voice not open for negotiation.
He took it carefully before crunching down on a kernel. His eyebrows flew up. “This is quite nice,” He approved, taking a handful. She smiled happily before turning on the T.V. to Mean Girls.
“Oh my gosh, yes!” Xitlali rejoiced, waving her hands in the air. Luke let out a small giggle. He might not be with her, but he can still be friends. Girls and guys can be friends . . . right?
