When I reached the Tower I walked in quietly and tiptoed up to my room. I couldn't tell anyone I left, who I'd met or what I'd seen. As I walked, I felt one of the wooden staircases make a creaking noise and stopped. I turned around to see if anyone was following me, but there was no one. Just the slight breeze around the room when the nightmares- "The nightmares..." I thought out loud. How could I have been out that long? Usually when the nightmares come back from training or work of giving children fear, it's dawn, almost daylight. I finished walking up to my room, and looked through my window for answers. Sure enough, the sun was rising.
I walked over to the mirror and stared at it, taking in all my facial features. I had dark brown hair, although my father kept telling me I had the smallest spark of auburn in it. I had light yellow eyes like my fathers as well. I always wished to find something that I had in common with my mother. There was no doubt I had one. I never believed my father when he said he raised me on his own. Someone walked into my life, and then they just left.
"Just forget about it." I told myself.
"Your mother left because she didn't like it here, she didn't leave because she hated you..."
As I stared at myself if the mirror some more, also taking in my body structure and the markings that covered my skin, I couldn't help but wonder. What if that's why she left me? What if she hated the girl she gave birth to and left me for my father to care for...alone? I wouldn't blame her. I had bruises covering almost every inch of my body, and scratches running across my arms. Not to mention the wound on my collar bone, that was still there. I shut my bedroom door slowly, careful not to make notice that I was awake.
I walked over to my dresser and picked up the brush, running it through my knotted hair. I stripped from my current clothes, revealing more cuts and bruises on my legs. I laid my dress by the window, and walked over to my closet. I finally decided on a navy blue knit dress, with white lace at the bottom. It helped cover the scratches, on my body, but the cut on my collar bone couldn't have been any more noticeable. Swinging a cloth over it so it didn't look as noticeable I headed towards my door.
When I reached the Kitchen I walked into the nursery room and shut the door. I saw our maid, Anne, who was washing the dirty clothes and tablecloths to the dining room. When she saw me she, smiled. "You're up early." I laughed and walked over to her, giving her a hug. "I couldn't sleep last night." Obviously taking into consideration, I could tell Anne was thinking on all the things that could have been keeping me up. "You're remembering again, aren't you?" I nodded, embarrassed to admit it. I looked like a fool when all I could remember about my life was right now and not when I was a kid.
Anne could remember her whole childhood in a click. "Childhood holds so many good memories." She usually said when I brought it up. "It's a shame you can't remember it." Seeing that I wanted to change the subject, Anne walked over to me and held her hand out. "Came to give me more cloths to watch I presume?" I grinned, clutching the cloth to my shoulder. "Well I was kinda hoping you could clean this too..." I took of the cloth, revealing my cut collar bone. The blood was dry, but some of it was still there, crusting around the cut.
Anne gasped and locked the door to the nursery, while I walked over and sat on the bench, waiting for her to answer. "Dear, what did you do to yourself!?" I shrugged, throwing the cloth over by the bucket of water. "That's the thing, I didn't do this," I pointed to my cut. "Someone else did." Anne walked over to the cabinet and got out the first aid kit and tugged out a wool knit cast from behind the shelf. "Someone?" She asked, pulling a stool next to me for her to sit down. I knew she was very interested. She was as limited as I was to go outside of the tower, and based on our past conversations, she wouldn't hold back if she had a chance to leave.
