it was lunch time, how exciting right? gemma didn't want to eat, no she didn't want to at all. but there wasn't really anywhere she could go, since it had been drizzling outside, they weren't letting anyone go to the basketball court. when it was bright and sunny, she would normally grab an apple from a fruit basket they had up front at the counters where they served lunch, and then run outside and sit far away from everyone. all she ever did was watch the clouds float by in the sky, or watch a fight break out near the court -- and that was really rare -- she didn't do much in school. she didn't do much outside school either. gemma never really knew why people thought so.

gemma stood in line waiting so it was her turn to get what she wanted. when she finally grabbed the apple, she tried looking for a seat in the lunch room where nobody was sitting at. yeah, she liked to exclude herself from people. i mean, if you were in her situation with people treating you like shit and pushing you around, wouldn't you want to be left alone? everyone would. especially since you have no one to turn to and vent to about all your problems. all the things you want to say and change about your life, but you're alone. and when you're all alone, things don't end very good.

she spotted a place to sit, hurrying toward it. when she got there, she noticed someone already there. gemma couldn't see him the first time because a column was in her way of seeing everything else. he looked up at her, smiling.

it was the boy from her algebra class. he had a sweatshirt on and his hoodie was pulled over his head; you could hardly see his face, but gemma sure saw it when he looked up at her.

she sat down across from him, and smiled back. this was the only seat available at the moment, every other seat was filled with her school mates. she sat her apple down in front of her and stared it down like it was poisonest.

"hey, are you gonna eat that?" he asked, looking at gemma curiously.

her eyes diverted from the apple to him, and she shrugged. "i really don't want to."
