Laksh" You ugly piece of shit! How dare you propose to me? Take a look at yourself dude! How ugly you are! Hmph! Loser! Asshole! Get lost! You are not even allowed to roam in this place! How can they allow such an ugly person!"
"Mona! Please don't say that! I really love you!" I said but she gave me a disgusting look. " Loser! Loser! Loser!" People around me started the chant. " Stop it guys! " Mona said. " I think it should be....ugly loser!" She said and smirked at me. I lowered my eyes. " Ugly loser! Ugly loser..." I closed my ears but their chant didn't stop. It was depressing to listen to them. I am ugly! I am indeed ugly! I hate myself!" Laksh! Why are you sweating like this? Laksh! Wake up! Wake up!" I got up and saw my mom's worried face.
" What happened Laksh?" "Nightmare mom!" I rubbed my eyes and got up from the bed. "The same one?" I didn't reply to her. "Laksh! You need to forget about it! How long..." " Okay okay. My dear beautiful mom! If you worry so much you will get old soon." I pinched her cheek and walked away. "Hmph! As if this is any better! I am growing old and my son is still a bachelor." Not again! "Mom, I am going to freshen up." I got into the bathroom. "It is every parent's dream to play with their grandchildren. Having such a lonely big house, I want it to be filled with your children. Is it too hard? Are you even listening to me?" I ignored her and turned on the shower. This was my daily routine. Dodging my parents' words when the topic is of marriage. l am just a normal person. A guy who is of marriageable age and is still single. A perfect career with a perfect family yet a bachelor.I sprayed the cologne and took a last look at myself in the mirror. Just like always, my eyes scanned the mark on my face. I wonder how my face would look without it. Nevermind, it doesn't change anything. The suit I wore, the cologne I spray and the aura I emit, nothing can change the fact that I am indeed ugly. Stop being such a pessimist early in the day. Just let go and move on. I cheered up myself. I answered my buzzing phone as I descended the stairs. "I would like to view the project details." I cut the call as I sat down to have my breakfast. A delicious aroma hit my nose. Dad was already sipping his tea at the table with his morning newspaper in hand. "Morning Laksh dear." He greeted me cheerfully. " Morning Dad" I looked at my wrist watch as I filled my glass with the orange juice. "Mr. Raghav Arora! Do you have any time to talk to your son?" Mom yelled at dad and I looked up from my plate. Dad looked at her and then at me. He was hesitating to tell me something. " What is it dad?" "Uh...it's something we both decided for you." I can guess the thing coming. "We found another match for you." There you go! " Dad..." " What? Talk to me!" Mom dared me as she sat in front of me. " Your sister married her boyfriend and is living happily abroad. What about you?" I gobbled up my breakfast and wiped my lips with the napkin. " Mom, It's of no use." " How can you say that? You shouldn't give up without trying." I shook my head in disbelief. I can never win against my mom. "Okay fine!" I gave up. "Come early in the evening." I gave her a nod as I walked away. "Laksh! Even if it is your secretary I will accept her. Just get married son. I want to hold my grandchildren. I want this place to be filled with tiny footsteps." I heard her voice as I left."Bye mom. Love you!"
" Good morning sir!" My secretary greeted me as soon as I walked into the office. I gave her a subtle nod and walked into my cabin. " Sir today's meeting list. And your schedule." She placed the list in front of me. " What about the project details?" She put forward a file." We tried negotiating for a reasonable price but nothing seems to get through them sir." "Schedule me a meeting with them. Book a table for 2 for lunch. We need to get this project by kith or kin." Shreya knew exactly what to do. She has been my personal secretary for a very long time. She is very dedicated to her work and has never given me a chance to yell at her.
Saanvi" Just let me sleep for some time!" I groaned and hugged my blanket tightly. I was about to slip into a deep slumber when my mom's voice boomed into my ears." Ms. SAANVI SHETTY! When are you planning to leave your bed?" I quickly got up and dashed towards my bathroom.
I tied up my hair in a high pony. I applied my favourite shade of lipstick and blew a kiss to myself in the mirror. I hopped down the stairs when I heard my mom " Hmph! I don't even have a helping hand. I should keep doing this even when I grow old! I have two lazy daughters! Good for nothing husband!" I hugged my mom from behind. " Why is my mom so irritated today?" She didn't reply. I was about to reach out for the hot parathas when my phone started ringing. "Oh no! I am late again. Bye ma." I gave her a kiss on the cheek and left with a rolled up paratha in my hand.
"Ma'am, the case has been shifted. The chief surgeon is yelling at us. Save us ma'am" I gave her a thumbs up as I entered the OT.
" Good morning sir." I greeted the grumpy old man. He rolled his eyes at me. "I have told you a million times Saanvi. Don't be late. Do you even respect me?" There he goes again with his 5 minute lecture. Life is tough especially when you have a grumpy old man as your mentor.
