CHAPTER TWO
MACIE RILEY
The walk to our office was short, but the constant chattering coming from Fliss made it seem a whole lot longer. I had barely paid attention to the guy, Harry Styles, she was shamelessly flirting with, and honestly didn’t care. My headache was the only thing I could think about. It was horrible. We walked into our building to the cheery face of the receptionist.
“Morning girls!” She trilled to us, ruffling through some papers in her desk. Fliss smiled at her as we walked past.
Fliss and I both worked for a news channel, as interns for now. We mostly ran errands and helped the cameramen, but one day we are going to be HUGE. The day passed slowly, Fliss being the only distraction cause she was making crazy faces at me when no one was looking.
When I got home my headache was feeling better so I decided to get takeout and ice cream and watch movies. I changed into sweats and a shirt and looked at myself in the mirror before heading out. My normally wavy hair was mostly just frizz, and my eye makeup was smudged. Oh well, I thought, and walked out the door.
After picking up my food I walked to a shop a little bit away and started searching for a tub of ice cream up to my standards.
As I walked towards the freezer aisle two guys jumped out at me, screaming. I, in turn, screamed back and fell over, spilling my Chinese food all over myself. My chow-mein noodles fell into my hair, and my kung pao chicken rolled down the aisle, spreading a layer of grease on the clean floors. My eyes, which had ben squeezed shut as I fell, opened to reveal two extremely fit guys staring at me.
The one on the left had blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. And on the right, whose mouth formed a perfect “o,” was none other than Harry Styles himself.
“Oh my god, you’re not Lou!” Said the blonde with an adorable Irish accent.
“Wait, Macie?” questioned Harry.
“Erm, hi Harry,” I mumbled, quite embarrassed of myself. However, the small Irish guy’s cheeks were far more red than mine. “I am SO sorry, I thought you were my friend and I wanted to play a joke and- wait harry you KNOW this girl?” he spoke, realizing Harry called me by name.
This guy was so cute when he was confused. I filled him in as I cleaned myself off, saying “Harry’s is going on a date with my friend sometime, we met this morning during coffee.” Niall still looked puzzled, but nodded and wandered away, humming to himself.
This left harry and I together, awkwardly not making eye contact. He finally spoke, asking “so, what brings you here?”
“Oh I’m just picking up some ice cream to eat tonight, I’m watching Titanic actually,” I said, then mentally kicked myself for it. What a loser. Wait, why did I care?
“That’s one of my favorite films! The boys all make fun of me, but I guess I just like it,” he admitted, slightly blushing.
“Really? Well I’d better go, its getting kind of dark out and I’m walking home.”
“Oh, I’ll walk with you!” Harry suddenly offered up, shocking me. I immediately refused, but Harry was really persuasive. I ended up giving in and he walked with me to pay for my ice cream, leaving my mess in the aisle.
HARRY STYLES
I don’t know what I was thinking, asking to walk her home. I mean, I barely knew this chick. But the way she looked, fiddling with her hair and rocking back and forth as she spoke, made me want to protect her from the bad guys that walked around at night.
She looked so innocent, and her eyes were huge and brown. They were actually kind of gold too, and- wait. Not supposed to be thinking like that. Im most likely gonna get it in with her friend this weekend. I forced myself to think of other things as we walked out of the store. I quickly texted the lads, saying I would be back in a little bit.
The walk was silent until the end. Macie spoke once when she stumbled over the uneven sidewalk. She let out a little squeak and grabbed tight on my arm. “Woah, you okay?” I asked after she had balanced herself again.
“No, I almost died there!”
The sight of her clinging onto me for dear life was funny to me. I was struggling to keep my laughter down but failed miserably. Macie tried to look angry but I could tell she was cracking. After a couple seconds She broke into laughter, eventually doubling over along with me.
When we regained composure we started talking about past trips and other humiliating things, and we stood on her porch for a few minutes. After a bit she grew serious.
“Well I’m gonna go watch my movie now,” she said, turning to the door of her flat. She hesitated and turned back around, adding, “Tonight was fun, in a weird way.”
“Yeah, erm, we should hang out sometime, maybe?” What was coming out of my mouth? Did that just happen? I looked at her expression, but she seemed happy.
“Yeah we should. Maybe we could watch the Notebook? If you like titanic, you have to love that one!”
“Yeah, I’m a sucker for chick flicks. It’s quite embarrassing actually,”
“No its good! Fliss hates those types so I have someone to cry with now!”
“You’re making me sound like your gay best friend Macie! I am a straight guy, for that matter.” I pointed out, acting offended. She laughed at that. Our conversation continued for a bit until we finally said goodbye, with a quick hug.I watched the door shut in front of me, then began to walk home.
This Macie girl could end up being a really good friend. I liked her a lot. I was thinking about that the whole way back. I was so lost in thought that I didn’t even notice that I had been smiling the entire walk home.
