It started when I was trying to bump the volleyball between my friend, Tess, and me. I saw a SUPER CUTE volleyball star from Japan named Tooru Oikawa, and Tess, being Tess, told me to go over and talk to him. "Tess," I said, "Do you expect me, a clumsy little teen of a fourteen-year-old, to walk up to a freaking awesome volleyball setter? I don't think so."
"How do you say hello in Japanese? Is it like 'Konichiwa!'?" She literally yelled "Konichiwa" over to him. She butchered the pronunciation, too. Well, it caught his attention and looked over at us.
I was yelling at her (technically speaking loudly), "Stop it! And if you're going to say it, do it properly. It's Konnichiwa." I had been learning Japanese with my bestie, Renee, and both of us could speak it pretty fluently.
He actually started to approach to see what the heck was going on. As I continued to tell Tess to shut up, he asked what was going on. I said in Japanese, "My friend is trying to butcher Japanese."
"I could tell. You're better at Japanese than I thought most Americans could be."
"You can't really put all Americans into the same box. We're all very different."
"What are you talking about?" Tess butted in.
"That's right. She is completely clueless. Hehehe." I grinned in my head at this thought. "We were talking about you."
"Talking about me in a different language? How rude!" she said in the way that I knew she was playing with me.
Switching back to Japanese I asked, "So why are you in the States? Wouldn't you have volleyball and school stuff? I mean, you do live across the biggest ocean."
"Wait. You know about me?"
"Well, I'm kind of into volleyball, and Japan also interests me, so I started researching Japanese high school volleyball players. You came up as one of the most talented."
"Waaaa!?" He look very excited.
Tess interrupted again. "Ahem. Lydia, have you asked for him to teach us yet?" she said quietly while elbowing me softly.
"Patience, child," I responded with a sigh. Switching back, I asked, "So, I've been trying to get better at my receiving, but I don't know people that can teach me more than I know. I was wondering if you would mind teaching me more for just a little bit."
"With pleasure."
"Really?! Thank you!" In English, "Okay, Tess. He said he would teach me!"
"Do you mind translating once in a while? Seriously, I understand nothing."
"If you want, I can speak in English for the sake of your friend," Oikawa said.
What the frick?! He can speak English?! He understood all that I was saying? Oh gosh! What will he think about me? Shut up! Stop worrying about what others think about you! Good golly! I inwardly sighed at my reaction. "She would appreciate that. Thanks!"
"No problem." Switching to English, "We should probably introduce ourselves. My name is Tooru Oikawa. What are your names?"
"My name is Tess West. Nice to meet you, Tooru."
"And my name is Lydia Mahoney. It's nice to meet you."
He proceeded to teach us the proper way of receiving the ball. He was a great teacher! I mean, not that I had anyone who actually played teach me, but still!
A/N (Author's Note): Hey, guys! Sooo... this is my first actual fanfic that I've been trying to start writing for the past few-ish months. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoy creating it! Please do me a favor and comment on whatever the heck you feel like making note of, whether that's inaccuracies that I need to fix or anything else.
Thanks a lot!
