Sophia's P.O.V
One Month Earlier
There is so much homework tonight. I might go to the library just to get some quiet. Yeah, I'll go to the--. What is that? I hear, what seems to be soft murmurs, maybe even sobs, in the alley near the laundromat. There was a girl; she seemed to be my age, beaten and bruised. Cuts and scrapes fill her arms and legs, tears in her Hollister tee-shirt and jean shorts. Bruises fill whatever space isn't red or covered in dirt.
She looks like a mess.
"Are you okay?" I quietly walk up to her, in fear she might cower away. She looks fragile, breakable even. She looks up at me, tears washing away some of the dirt, but her face was worse than anything. I fast walk over to her and go to help her, at least to the hospital.
"Can you stand?" I ask as I grasp her side helping her up. She winces away. I notice that on the other side of her body, the one facing away from me originally was covered in blood.
"Oh my God, who did this to you?" I lift up her shirt to assess the damage that is done. But I see what scares me even more.
Game over.
The words were etched into her skin. The words will haunt me for the rest of my life. I pull out my phone to call the police. She shakes her head vigorously.
"Yo-you can't t-tell anybody." She wheezes out in short breaths.
"Who did this to you?" I ask, my voice shaky.
"If I t-tell you, you enter the g-game."
"What game? Who did this to you?" There were thousands of more questions running in my head. Winding it's way around my brain, squeezing the sanity right out.
"The Gods. The Gods end sinners. I told a secret, I broke a promise. We're both sinners. It's game over for both of us." She explains.
"I-I don't understand."
"Good luck." She limps away, down the dark alley.
My phone buzzes in my pocket.
Welcome to the game, Sophia. Are you ready to play?
Thousands of questions race around my head. Raveling and weaving their way into my thoughts. The game? That girl was talking about the game. How am I in the game? What is going on?
Do you want answers, Sophia?
Do I?
