Charlotte's P.O.V.
I walked up the familiar steps and stopped at the door, my sister's hand was still in mine. I didn't have to turn around to see if the boys had followed us here, I know they did.
"You shouldn't have followed me Luke."
"I want to be friends."
"We can't be."
I heard him sigh behind me, I unlocked the door to let Ania in. When I looked down I saw her glance at Michael and then looked back at me. I knew it wasn't a good idea but I didn't want these kids around such a serious conversation, so I nodded my head to the silent question she asked. Her and Michael ran inside excitingly. It was only Luke and I now...and the next door neighbour who's watching this from her window.
"Now will you tell me why we can't be friends?" I saw the look in his eyes, he was hurt and confused. But how do you explain to someone that you can't be friends with them because you don't have a life. That the reason you have no friends at all is that your mother doesn't allow you to be social.
"You don't need me as a friend, you already have so many. Trust me it's better this way."
"Why does it matter that I already have friends? I don't understand what's wrong."
I run my hand through my hair, getting frustrated with myself. I saw Luke's eyes drift to my wrists, he saw my scars.
"Charlotte where did you get this?" I knew that he knew where I had gotten them from, he just wanted to hear me say it.
"I think it's best if you leave Luke." I saw the reluctance in his eyes but he called for his brother and off they went. I finally went inside and checked on Ania, she was quietly doing her homework and listening to music. I went back to my room and head straight for the only thing that would bring me comfort.
The shiny metal was sitting there. It was waiting for me. I closed my eyes and a few drops of salt water leaked from my eyes. I knew that there was nothing to cry about, I was just making a big deal out of everything, like I usually do. I picked up the cold metal, the familiar weight in my hand bringing me immediate comfort.
Let's just get this over with.
You know what to do.
The tears were now a steady stream coming from my eyes. The thoughts were whizzing around in my head. It was all too much. Luke, Ania, those demons that are constantly screaming in my head, my mother...it was all just way too much. Without even thinking the metal came down on my wrist made its mark, but this time one wasn't enough. I blindly made cut after cut, it was like the demons had taken over. I don't if it was because I made too many cuts or if it was because the comfortable feeling was just too much, the blade fell out of my hand and I found myself slipping away into darkness. Finally feeling the peace I have always wanted.
Luke's P.O.V.
I don't understand why she doesn't want to be friends with me, was I really that bad? And what about those scars, was she in danger? Why was she event hurting herself? There was just so many unanswered questions with this girl and I wanted answers. I've seen her around schools, she's like a robot. She goes to school, goes to class and goes home, that's it. Except when she goes to English, that's the whole reason I want to be her friend. It's like when she's in that class something ignites in her, like her whole life is in that one class. I called out my brothers name and told him that we were going back to Charlotte's house, he didn't mind, he loves seeing his new friend. I walked up the the stairs and knocked on the door, it took a few minutes but before you know I saw Ania's face through the crack of the door.
"Hi, Ania is your sister here?" I knew that Charlotte was home but I just wanted to make sure. The nod that Ania gave me was enough of a confirmation so I asked, "can you go getter her so I can talk to her? You and Michael can play while we talk."
At the sound of that she perked up, opened the door and ran up the stairs to, what I assumed, was her sisters room. I heard a blood curdling and ran up the stairs, Michael followed behind me. When we reached, what I hoped to be Charlotte's room, I told Michael to wait in that spot because I didn't know what to expect. I saw Ania standing above a lifeless, bloody body, she was shaking like a leaf and her eyes had waterfalls of tears coming out of them. I tried to touch her shoulder but she let out another ear deafening scream. So I walked around her, bent down and checked Charlotte's pulse, luckily there was one but it was very faint. If we don't get her help now it could be too late.
"Ania I know you're scared but you need to call for an ambulance right now." As I expected she didn't move, so I yelled out to my brother and told him to that. He asked why but I just told him to do it and that it was a life or death situation. I didn't want him to see this, one kid has already seen it and I know how traumatizing it can be. I focused my attention to Charlotte and immediately checked her wrists to see if that was where the bleeding was coming from. Once I saw all the cuts she made, and how deep they were, I went around to the sink to try and find dome towels to apply pressure. She already lost a lot of blood and I didn't want her losing anymore. A sense of déjà vu hit me hard. This scene was all too familiar for me. But like always I push those feelings to the back of my mind. The paramedics came and I watch them take Charlotte away, leaving Ania, Michael and I behind.
