Thank you all for reading The Duke's Bidding... Its been a while since I have been able to update my story, but we had some life changes that were unavoidable. Our eldest was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, which was surprising as we had no genetic markers or history of it in the family. Plus she is my kid that does not like sugary things. Go figure. Best they could tell us is that her immune system was affected by the flu she had which triggered the Type 1. So much to learn about the human body! I tell you, the more I learn, the more I realize I know nothing! Needless to say we are all learning about how to live our life in such a way that it does not make her feel like her disease defines her.
I am learning a lot about the human spirit and condition. My daughter is teaching me that what I thought was inner strength and fortitude are nothing compared to her resilience and outlook on life. Its a lesson well worth considering. She is my hero! On a more practical note, I encourage everyone to really teach your kids to love reading and learning. I am so blessed to have a kid who loves to read and learn. She reads at 10th grade level despite being only 9 and can probably write as well as a freshman in High School so understanding what is happening to her body and how to manage her health is primarily in her hands. She kept telling us she wanted to be a scientist when she grew up, and now she jokes that she already is one, and her body is her first experiment! She is so very self aware so for the most part we are going along the ride as she discusses her observations and analysis her results. So when we just sit back at Dr. Appts and let her take over, it confuses the doctors but also really impresses them when they realize whats happening. One endocrinologist has even notated it in his charts so he remembers to discuss things with her directly instead of looking at us.
Anyway, emotionally this has been really hard. I keep catching myself blaming my actions from the past or wondering if what I did had any part in her getting sick. Logically I know that's not how it works, but I cant help it sometimes. I think to an extent this has leaked into the other aspects of my life but I am trying to get my head straight again... develop routine, fill my time with positive things and pray. With that said...
Rest assured I am back to writing!
I have chapter 17 out to edit as we speak and hope to have it updated later this week. Happy reading folks! AND THANKS FOR COMING ALONG ON THIS JOURNEY!
