Gwendoline POV

I ran out of the HYDRA facility as they shot countless bullets in a desperate attempt to restrain me. I thought they would have learnt by now that the bullets do not even scratch my skin upon impact. One would think that they would be cleverer than that seeing as they were the ones who made me this way.

I ran and ran until the run down factory looking HYDRA facility was out of sight and the gunshots stopped. I walked with a facade of calmness and moved casually around the streets of London. Realising that I had no place to stay and no money or identification, I started to walk a bit faster.

It was freeing to be able to walk down the streets of London with no luggage, no guns, no fake IDs made by HYDRA and no comms in my ear.
Finally able to have control over my actions, I found myself smiling happily as I kept walking.

The sun had set hours before I found a small alleyway. It was dark, quiet and empty. I quickly decided this was the safest place to stay away from HYDRA, I had access to.
I walked down the small, damp alleyway and found an old sofa. It looked as though it might have once been cream coloured but was now covered in dirt and was slightly damp.

I didn't care. It had been non stop missions fighting against SHIELD for a few months. I didn't want to fight but I didn't have a choice back then. I killed 46 SHIELD agents on my last mission. I'm not proud of what I did but I had to raid that SHIELD base to gather Intel on the agent Daisy Johnson. HYDRA had been informed that she had changed into something they called an 'inhuman' and that I had to find out the most that I could about her and these other so called 'inhumans' to see if they were potential threats who we have to take out or if we could use them to our advantage.

We killed everyone but one of them wouldn't die so we took her hostage for information instead. Melinda May was hard to break but I had met harder so it was only 5 hours of interrogation before she gave away some information.
I did not want to hurt her, to manipulate her but what choice did I have?

When I was first modified and 'gifted' my abilities, they couldn't control me. They tried everything but the needles would not pierce my skin, no matter how sharp. Nobody -not even myself- could control my powers. Nobody but my father. Being the esteemed scientist at the top of HYDRA that he was, created a gas. I don't know how he did it but my skin was crawled and my  insides felt like they were on fire. Not the metaphorical fire but it was physically burning my organs.

I sat on the damp sofa, listening to the cars pass, when I heard breathing from around 8 feet away. It was quiet but after HYDRA training, you learn to hear quiet things. The footsteps were slow and almost soundless but I could hear them moving, as the distance from me to them shortened from 7 to 6 then 5 then 4 then 3...

I stayed sitting, appearing as though I was unaware of their presence.

The footsteps sounded like those of a man. Short. 5 foot 4 maybe. Skinny.
When he was arms length away, I saw an outline of a gun in his hand and moved swiftly to grab it.  He held on to it so I pulled his arm with such force that when he slammed into the wall above the sofa, a small trickle of blood dripped on to the stained sofa.

He  followed the blood onto the sofa and I decided he wasn't worth it. Just some mugger who wanted some extra money. I could smell it on him. Drugs and cigarettes.

Not wanting to stay for very long, I quickly checked his pockets and took his wallet but I left his gun because I didn't need it. I had my extendable batons hidden under my large trench coat, attached to my HYDRA uniform.

What I didn't have any other clothes.

I walked down the pavement and soon came across a small café. I bought a cup of tea and the most amount of food I could afford (a croissant) and sat down at a table at the back, away from the window.

Nobody knows me but I didn't want to draw attention to myself.

Getting comfortable, I kept my coat on and observed the people in the café. By the window, there was a small family who looked like they were eating out.

There was a mother around her mid forties who was chatting happily to the father, who looked to be in his late forties. There were two teenagers who appeared to be their twin, sitting with them. One boy and one girl, the boy was on his phone while the girl was staring out of the window.

A sense of jealousy erupted inside of me. I felt completely and utterly alone because that's what I was. I yearned for affection from my father but was never received it. I was treated as nothing more than a weapon by my father since I was 12. I don't remember anything from before that.

I was suddenly snapped out of my thoughts by a loud clatter, as a waitress tripped on the outstretched foot of the boy who was on his phone earlier.

While his parents started telling him off, a man came up to the waitress and helped her up. He looked up and recognition flashed in his eyes as he looked straight at me.

He stood there still staring at me with fear and me staring at him in confusion, untilI realised he was most likely an agent of SHIELD.

Without a second glance, I hastily paid and left the café.
