Today I saw 2 girls going on a walk. I know, I know, people walk in the park all the time, but this time it was different. One girl who had short hair was looking around like she has never seen trees and nature before. She said something quietly with her eyes open wide to the other girl with dark hair. The dark haired girl burst out in laughter and grabbed the other girls hand. They... they looked happy.
I told my mom what I saw. She told me they must be good friends and started to drag me away to go get ice cream. But I didn't want ice cream, I wanted to watch them.
The girl with dark hair was now pushing the short haired girl on a swing set. They were talking in murmured voices and had a pink tint to their cheeks even though it was a perfect temperature outside. I started to wonder if they were more than just good friends. I see the short haired girl look into the dark haired girls eyes. People look into each others eyes all the time, but I never saw anyone look at each other like that. I didn't know how to describe it, it was like some unknown force was not letting them look away. Maybe they were having a staring contest.
I moved in closer, realizing my mom has left me to buy ice cream on her own. I didn't care though. I felt like there was something going on here. They were happy. They looked like they were in...
Love. The 2 girls were in love and I wanted to feel it too. My mom always said I would get a boyfriend when I am way older, but I don't think I want a...
CRACK!
I turn over my shoulder to see a girl laying on the grass, looking up at the sky and a boy who has fallen over on the concrete.
"Are you okay?" I ask the boy to make sure he isn't dead. I kept my eye on the girl laying on the grass. I hope I got a chance to talk to her.
"Yes... i'm... i'm fine." The boy stammered and looked at his knees. I want to help him, but I can't stop myself from looking at the girl laying on the grass.
"What's your name?" He smiled at me.
"Elise." I say and look back at the girl. She had long, golden locks and wore a silver skirt.
"I'm Marco." The boy jumped up from the ground and shook my hand. "Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too." I say.
"You have very pretty eyes Elise." Marco kept staring at me. I felt uncomfortable. What's so special about eyes anyways? All they do is see, everybody has them.
"Um... thanks." I want to talk to her. I want to hear her voice. "I gotta go Marco."
"Oh... you don't want to hang out or anything?"
"You can ask my mom!" I started to run to the girl. Away from Marco and all of the awkwardness that came with him.
"Okay, I will!" He called back to me. I shook my head. He seemed like a nice person, but why did he say such things?
As I got closer to the girl I started to slow down. What if she doesn't want to talk to me? A coat of anxiety and nervousness covered over me. What if she only looks up at the sky and never says anything at all?
I walk to her and find myself having to catch my breath. I am only 12 years old, but she is the most gorgeous human being I ever saw in my life.
"What are you looking at?" I stand over her, praying she will answer.
She sits up and I can feel my heart in my chest.
"The clouds." Her voice was soft and dreamy, the complete opposite of mine.
"Can I watch with you?" I start to sit down away from the girl. Just in case she needs some personal space.
"This is a free country, I can't stop you from doing anything." The girl smiled at me and tilted her head like a baby puppy.
"Well, do you want me to lay here?" I picked at the blades of grass between my fingers. The 2 girls were swinging their held hands while walking to the ice cream place. I start to wonder where my mom is.
"As long as you don't annoy me." The girl giggled and patted a spot next to her. I kicked off my shoes and scooted over next to her, careful not to sit on her skirt.
"That sounded kind of rude you know."
"I'm joking. I know you won't annoy me, that's why I said that." The girl lied down and crossed her arms over her chest. Then we started talking. We talked about our life stories and ice cream flavors. We pointed out different cloud formations and laughed at the seagulls who were attempting to steal an old woman's Cheetos. It was only when I saw my mom walking back with two ice cream cones in her hand that I realized that I never got her name.
"What's your name?" I looked at her and smiled. I wondered what name could a wonderful person like her have. Time went by so fast talking and staring. Staring at beautiful things like blue skies and golden hair.
"Thalia." She said softly into the grass. "My name is Thalia."
"I'm Elise."
"We both have weird names Elise."
"They are just unique."
Thalia gave a small laugh and smiled at the ground. I looked behind my shoulder. The 2 girls were no where to be seen, but I didn't care anymore. I have a girl to admire and create feelings with.
"Do you come here often?"
"I come here everyday around the same time. It's kind of strange."
I saw my mom getting closer. Sweat started to form on my forehead. I didn't want to go. I wanted to stay in the park forever and watch the clouds turn into stars and the sun turn into the moon.
Thalia. Such a beautiful name for a beautiful person.
"Can I see you again Thalia?"
"I hope so."
I got up and brushed the stray blades of grass off of my clothes.
"Well... see you later then!" I bounced on my toes. I didn't want my mom to see her.
"Bye." Thalia looked at the sky and closed her eyes. She didn't look happy. I wanted to make her happy.
I really want to see her again.
