When we reached California, I drove to the nearest gas station to pump more gas into the car.
I shook my dad awake and as he woke up Kenai, I got $20 out of the glove compartment then walked into the building to pay for the gas and a can of tea.

When I walked back to the car, my dad and I switched places so that he could drive.
When I finally looked down at the clock on my phone, it was 8:15am.
I was too awake to take a nap so I just looked outside my window, taking in the city and it's scenery.

My mom used to say I was a wonderer because I tend to get lost in my thoughts and daydream during car rides.

It was Summer, I was 10 years old and Kenai was like half my height at the time.
Our parents thought it was a good idea for us to visit California to see my mom's family, but mostly to expose us to the beach.

It was a beautiful day, we went to the beach near the evening during twilight. There was hardly anyone at the beach.
I remember my father chasing me, threatening to drop me in the water.
I was giggling... attempting to run away from him. Once he caught me, my mom tried "rescuing" me in the act of the game.

I could still hear her voice and her laugh when my father put me down to go after her. "Tackling" her to the ground... tickling her into surrender. Kenai body slamming my dad like he was Nacho fighting Ramses...

My thoughts got cut off by my dad,"You know, your mother and I would take trips here every other Summer? She loved going to the beach

My thoughts got cut off by my dad,
"You know, your mother and I would take trips here every other Summer? She loved going to the beach." He said. "Then when you and Kenai were born we would try to take you guys along with us..."

"Yeah, I remember..." I said, as I took a glance at my father I added, "She really loved you, ya know?"

"She loved you and your brother even more. You two were her whole world. You're both such a blessing for me, you and Kenai bring me such joy... I'm proud of you, both of you." My father said.

Pretty soon I passed out from driving for 6 hours, and when I woke up my dad was playing tunes in the car.
